It started Monday and continued, she is home but no better, and her son has had three close calls with his sugar. Totally incoherent once (they become very combative), another time even worse and already clenching, third time not as bad. She calls us first because Mark can usually fight with him and get the glucose into him, sometimes not. After the tablets, 2 mugs of orange juice, 1 mug of milk, peanut butter/jelly sandwich, he was only 48 a half hour later. The EMT's took him to the hospital and we picked him up at 2am. He will not survive when Carole is gone because this happens when he sleeps and without someone there to make sure he wakes, he will slip away. Hopefully Friday will be a quiet day for us and things will settle down. I know Carole will eventually show improvement but this flu is the worst I have seen. BTW, Emily apologized to Chris.

So sorry about your nephew. The neighbor next door to us was severely diabetic and wore an insulin pump. Would that be an option?

Marly that has to be so frightening for the whole family. I was also wondering about the insulin pump, although you have probably considered all options. I love the bird heart finishes you did a great job. Hope the rest of the week is quiet for you. Take care.
I am a brand new Type I diabetic at age 67. My endocrinologist prescribes Tresiba for me to take once a day to maintain my blood glucose and prevent it from dropping while I'm asleep at night. The units given are determined by the doctor and calculated to a person's weight. I also drink some orange juice and eat a few grapes and pretzels before going to bed on those nights where my glucose readings are low-normal or low. This regimen seems to work. A Dex Com monitor would probably be good to have, too. It beeps an alarm when the readings get dangerous. I'm scheduled to get one soon. I'd recommend getting some Tresiba for your nephew and give him all my well wishes. This is truly a difficult way of life! Adele
Gosh, so sorry to hear that your nephew is not doing well at all. Diabetes can be so tricky! But I know you guys do what needs to be done! Not good to hear that Carol is not doing any better either. On the bright side, the stitched hearts are PERFECT! Love them! You did a great job!! Hugs to you!!
Such a hectic week! My father had diabetes and his sugar would drop dangerously at night. I found that if about an hour or so before he went to bed, I gave him 1-2 slices of Swiss cheese and a couple of wheat crackers, it would help stave off the drops. When his sugar dropped, I would give him 4 oz of Coke. That stuff is so loaded with sugar, it helped get him coherent enough to eat and drink. I'm sure you have probably already tried tjis before but I thought it couldn't hurt to share. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

How awful for Chris but luckily you were able to get there to help and he was able to get to the hospital. Not sure if this info helps or whether you're already aware of it - a friend and our former pastor (who is also an RN) always kept a tube of that colored decorating icing - the kind available at the grocery store - near the pulpit in case someone had a diabetic emergency. She said squirting some of the goo under the tongue is the fastest way to get the sugar into a person's system.
Sorry Carole isn't doing better. I know the flu this year is *awful* - lots of really bad cases and also very debilitating.
Between your sister and nephew, you have your hands full. How scary for Chris.
