Hello all! Thank you so much for the comments on Lucy. I honestly had my doubts more than once that she would ever be completed. She will be framed but until then....guess what?
I went to a primitive show at The Hidden Den in Salem, Ohio last weekend and found this. It's very large - 24 x 25 on the inside. Now, I don't have to tell you where this is going. I planned on it just taking up wall space in a bedroom until I was pressing Lucy and thought.....hmmmmm..
I also found this cupboard which I adore. It's very long (37") and narrow (12"), perfect for a sampler on the door.
Eliza Pumroy was my first thought and if too wide to fit between the door's frame, I can always hang it inside with the door open. It was my first visit to that shop and to Bridgewater Primitives in Alliance, Ohio. Yowser. I was in heaven. Over an hour drive from here and I will certainly visit again. I took photos and will sneak a few more into future posts.
I'm not a fan of Facebook and its invasive practices, but I think you can find this shop there. Lots of textiles, antiques, hand mades, large wood pieces, great scents, with helpful and welcoming service.
After a wasted two days searching for BOAF's Gold Santa, I finally found him. I knew he was in a clear pocket with the others but tore the house apart and couldn't find him. Luck would have it, I dropped a Dove chocolate between my end table and the sofa arm. It fell right into a canvas bag that is hanging from the table, and holding exactly what I was looking for. See? When I organize and actually have something where it should be, I still can't find it.
I started Malabar Farm twice, and I'm still not happy with the fabric count.
I don't have linen higher than 32 and I will search through them for what appears to be a tighter weave. I know 32 is 32, but is it just me or do some same count fabrics appear to have a smaller stitch? I actually considered over one on 25 count (did you feel a shift in the universe) but the holes in the linen look too big. I'm really getting weird. Aida is something I've used only a few times but I'm seeing quite a few pieces on 18 count, aged, and looking damn good. I don't have any - no store around here has anything other than 14 count. I plan on placing a chart order soon and will probably add a piece to the order along with a (gulp!) 35 count piece of linen. AUGH!!
I also don't have but one of the required colors and there isn't a DMC option, I'm too lazy to look up a conversion, so I chose my own. The peacock is that gorgeous Gingersnap. I have a few other things to mention but don't want to make this longer than it is, and really need to get moving outside.
I bought the cats a canvas fish filled with catnip hanging from elastic, hung it from the 2' shepherd's hook, and Nitwit is having a ball.

Hi Marly! I LOVE Lucy in the basket--love the basket too--I'm going to have to go to Salem one of these days--and Alliance. The cupboard you found is great--I love that it is tall and skinny...sigh...wish I WAS!! Are you going to James Creek Gallery's show later this month? Love Lucy. In fact, I love her so much that I tracked down a copy of her on Sandra's etsy page and bought my very own copy for my procession of samplers up the staircase--yes, I know, I still owe you some photos (meno-brain, dontcha know?).
You mentioned the once dreaded "aida" and now that I find myself growing older and blinder, I find myself gravitating back to 18 or 20 count aida, hand-dyed of course by me, because of focus issues with these peepers. A good quality, higher count aida, nicely hand dyed is a suitable fabric for us former "linen snobs" who are now having vision issues but are reluctant to give up the stitching. After all, weren't we the ones who pioneered stitching back in the days or huge aida?
Get some 18 or 20 count and dye it then give it a try.
That shop was quite a find!! Lucy continues to pull at my stitching fingers!
I would keep "Lucy" right where she is1 She looks fantastic in that basket. Love the "hidden den" and the pictures that you've shared from there. I have the Malabar Farm pattern and after seeing yours, I think I may just have to get this one out!!!

Good luck with Gold Santa! Have you tried Weeks Dye Works 35 count? A very supple linen, I am not good with high counts either and have to use a magnifier, but this one is fabulous.

I know that some of the hand dyed fabrics may have started as 30ct or 35ct but after the dying process seem to be a smaller count. I think some seem different due to the tightness or looseness of the weave. i hope that makes sense, it is a little early here.

Lucy is GORGEOUS in that basket! Can't wait to see what you put on that cabinet door : ) You really are the queen of creativity you know : ) You should try stitching Malabar on osnaburg ... I think you'd really like the effect. The stitch count, whatever it is (SMALL) might be too small for it though. Wish I could see Nitwit playing with that fish ... it must be a hoot!
Lucy looks wonderful in the basket! I'm going to think about this idea. :) Love the things you found in the shop! It seems like the few places that were around here for things like that have disappeared. Love the chicken/bird? family too! I'm crazy for anything by Stacy Nash - hope you solve your fabric dilemma.
Lucy looks AWESOME in the basket! I might be tempted to leave it there indefinitely.
18 count aida is very hard to get a needle through and I have injured my hand stitching on it. I have one project in my not finished pile that is on 18 count and I hate working on it because of the hand cramping. I would definitely recommend a higher count on the linen instead, but that's my preference. Hopefully you will find something you like for that piece.

Personally, I think God was sending you a message that you need to keep eating Dove dark chocolates. Do that and all things you seek shall come to you, or something along those lines. ;)
Ha!! Better that you made a basket case of Lucy than you of her! ;o) Seriously - that is one gorgeous basket - and I'd be hard pressed to think of a frame that would suit that beautiful little brat more perfectly than the basket you've found for her.....
Love the cupboard too. Oh that we had such places in Nod...Even the names of the towns are quaint and charming. "Alliance" and "Salem"....and we have "Wausau." Yeah....that's right...."Wausau." ;o) Think I need to locate some things....bring on the chocolates....Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin
