Rethinking

The bottom drawer holds linens I doubt I will use and it's been thinned.  But the others really need to be sorted.  I think the 25 count unbleached will go for sure, but I still have reservations about the 28 count.  Planning to keep some of course.  But glad I didn't go ahead with the big sale as I planned.

 

 

 

My favorites that I stitched long ago were all done on SL 25 count or 28 count.  Why don't they look like large stitches to me?  Maybe the 25 count will be the only to leave.  I am leaning toward the lighter backgrounds now and got rid of those a while ago, never expected to use them.  I should learn from that!!

 

Lydia Bond and Safrona Ager, why am I so drawn to them?  Hannah Breed is another oldie favorite, still available from SL.  She was purchased as a kit and done on 25 count and I love it.

The 25 count is unbleached but not as dark as what I have now.  Is it because the white mounting board shows through the more open weave of 25?  Probably.  But she also does not look like a large stitch to me unless a 35 count is right next to her.  And look at that over one section.  I did it decades ago but avoid it completely now.  Some times looking back and examining favorites reminds me why I started stitching and may give me the boost I need.  The pages of Sampler Farmer's samplers on the now defunct photo website was the impetus after my first long break.  Her work really inspired me to start stitching again.  Can Lydia and Safrona do it again?  I think so!!

 

Last days of September.  Damn.  Seems like just yesterday I was bitching about losing August.

Another casualty

He left early, changed his mind about coming tomorrow, left all the mess for me to clean up, moved his big saws into our garage so we can't pull in either car, and then I see this.

 

He claimed that mitering the corners would not work out with these board lengths (he knew the length from the beginning), and asked if he could butt the joints after running the edge on the saw for a tight fit.  He did not.  He used the mill edge which is damaged, does not fit tight at all, is loaded with glue, and not the type of beam I was expecting.  So now what?  Do I tell him to come and get his equipment?  I walked on eggshells because he gets angry easily, and do not want to cause him any more anxiety.  But I do not want this.  Mark knows him and he is a hard worker, does all the finish carpentry for these massive homes with an excellent reputation!  He did the other trim perfectly and I don't know what to make of this, or what to do. 

 So I baked Death by Chocolate zucchini breads.  The large one will go the Postmaster that is a riot and a great guy, the small ones in the freezer.  I finally wised up so I don't have to devour an entire bread and these smalls will be perfect for a decadent treat in moderation.  Unless I eat more than one.

Casualties

A little too much pounding can knock two stacks of heavy wooden bowls off the top of a cabinet.  Who knew old brittle wood can break?  Who knew that it would happen to two of them?  One can be glued, one has several very small edge pieces that are shattered.  I know many old bowls are held together with metal strips and wire.  Not sure I will bother with the shattered one.

 

And who knew that wooden bowls can actually gouge your hardwood floors?

No big deal.  This is why I don't care for refined or classic decorating for my home.   The lived in beat up look is easier to maintain.  When you have primitives, guests do not know if that is the look of the piece or it's in need of a good cleaning. 

 

I just hope he continues with the rest of the jobs.  His PTSD is pretty severe and this really upset him.  I told him it's no big deal and continued making the zucchini breads.  But I'm concerned.  I can hear him taking deep breaths and he has gone outside to walk around several times. 

 

Sun is out today.  But that doesn't make Fall any easier to accept.  And I know that the seasons and the redecorating and the wood knots and the heavy zucchini breads and the sagging jowls and the large derriere don't mean a damn thing in the big picture.  Just nuisances along a path that will end soon enough, so enjoy all the scenery along with the rocks.  No path is without them.

Beaming

Friday morning at 9am, Mike will be mitering these boards to make box beams and then installing them.  Dominic will be starting on the two large cabinets for the room next week.  I designed them as simple as can be, plain plank doors, no moulding, to be painted as the room's trim.  Oh no.  Paint color.  It's always something!!

 

 

Carole saw the cardiologist today and received a good report.  He was surprised at how well she looked compared to seeing her last month in the hospital.   I didn't go with her, or he would have said "and your sister looks bigger!".

 

Spaghetti tonight, what more could I ask for?

Anyone?  I've used a ruler to determine thread count and came up with 14 and 20.  Here's what I have... and do not want ....

19" x 42" 20 count linen in a light tan  $6
12" x 16" 20 count in unbleached  $3

18" x 27" in an ivory 14 count  $3

You can see color difference.

This is the 14 count.

I will verify shipping with PO tomorrow because I am (as usual) confused.  Their website states there can't be more than 1/4" thick variance in large envelopes and the package rate must be used.  The PO employee said that is not true and that only applies to smaller envelopes.  But the website states large.   Shipping can be $3 or $4.50, we'll see who wins.  Let me know if you are interested, otherwise I won't bother the nice guy at the PO and use the long one as a table runner.

Takedown

How's your weekend going?  Chilly?  The brats are good indicators of seasonal changes.  Cuddling in a box is definitely the start of cool weather.  It must be cat mating season because I have new strays and others gathering in the woods.  I didn't realize that spaying does not stop the spring and fall fight clubs.  I have found it easy to order their foods through Walmart.com and pick up in the store.  Now I don't have to wait for stock or search when they change the store inventory.  They LOVE Whiskas Meaty Selections, no longer carried in store and out of stock online, so we online order at PetSmart, same day pickup,  $17.99 in store, $13.00 online.  Order, they pull it off the shelf, you pick it up, and it's $5 cheaper than taking it off the shelf yourself.  Found this to be true with many items.

 

Yesterday I removed the dry wall and metal corner beads from the doorways where wood trim will be installed.  What a mess.  The furnace was not running and no windows were open to disperse the dust but that fine white gypsum and talc makes it way throughout the house.  The stitchery was not in the area but I should have removed it all beforehand regardless.  So this morning it was like an Easter egg hunt trying to locate the smalls that were still left out, and this afternoon all the wall items will be moved to the overflow room upstairs. 

I guess I have enough combined to make a large sampler wall display but not sure if I will, if I want to, or what room it should be.  Still wondering if I should have the fringed and free pieces framed.  If a sampler wall will be a feature, I don't see it with a mix of the two.  But maybe the mix would create interest?  Some of the pieces on the far wall have glass, some do not, the large ones in another room do.  There's plenty of time to think about it, with my procrastinating, maybe years. 

 

The sun came out and I noticed a bright white ball above the plants.  It's a new flower!  I guess the hydrangeas don't want to let go of summer either.

Before, during

and hopefully soon, an after.  My very small dining room that is not used will be cleaned up and brightened. 

After reducing items in the hutch which started the it all.

 

 

Forty some paint samples throughout wall and trim, two curtain samples, and I like the bareness.  Wayne made it feel closed in, mostly because of the dark color.   Mark prefers the previous plain curtains, I'm leaning toward the woven tablecloth with fringe (gold) in natural/off white.  The wood chandelier is going, but where?  I want a simple black iron to match the hinges on the hutch.

Thought dark wood beams would go well with all light trim and walls, but not sure since the room is so small.  Also haven't decided if a simple wainscot will be too much, but the carpenter thinks it would be a good idea to match the shaker profile of the built in hutch on the walls.  We'll see.

Rush job

Hello people.  I'm sitting on my swing during the last day of hot weather.  We are getting storms later and all will change to the 60's.  The wind is a welcome change.  The change in temperature is not.

 

A gentleman that I called for an estimate to do our carpentry work just left.  He worked for his brother who has been building McMansions for decades.  He took out his tape and notebook and before I knew it, he told me he will start early next week.  I never told him he had the job.  I didn't ask what he charges.  I didn't get an estimate. He talked about being a Vietnam veteran (Tet Offensive) suffering from PTSD and depression and can't work a five day week because of Thursday trips to the VA.  If not for his weekly sessions and medication, he could not function.  Mark knows him and all his life he has worked hard, overtime, in the steel mill and building homes, and it wasn't until he retired six years ago that the nightmares and terrors started.  He can come to work here all he wants and I hope it helps him through his days.  I will certainly benefit from having him here. 

 

We had planned on removing the old trim and drywall door casings ourselves, and wanted the ceilings painted before the box beams are installed.  I will be a busy B this weekend and try my best to prepare what I can.  I have two days to decide on cedar or pine beams, knots or not, stain color, ceiling color, style of Wayne's coat, and the width of the other room's shiplap.

 

My chiropractor may not know wall coverings, but she knows more about the spine, neck, and muscles than any other I have ever been to.

Who?

Today at the chiropractor's (she is very young and excellent) the doctor inquired what had happened since I was just there last week.  I started explaining that I was removing wainscot and the top part was already loose.  But when I yanked to get the lower part off, it was held tight and jerked me in.

 

"It's been pretty warm here", she said.
Yes it has.
"And you had trouble getting it off?"
Parts of it.
"Is that your son?"
Puzzled, I looked around the large room and answered that I don't have kids.
"I know your husband is Mark, so is that your brother?"
What the hell is she talking about?

"Who?" I asked.
"Wayne.  The guy whose coat you were taking off."

Extra extras

After counting the charts sold, putting them in recipient piles, double and triple checking, even stuffing the mailing envelopes of buyers, I kept coming up with several charts left over.  This was driving me nuts.  Who would have thought that some designs were duplicates?  Never dawned on me!  I finally got it straight and I hope when you open your envelopes, the right charts are in there!!

 

Bud is enjoying what is left of warm sunny days. 

 

 

The last of our tomatoes aren't ripening properly yet aren't green enough to fry.  The final zucchini was picked.  All that's left are hot peppers and I have no intention of canning this year.  Stuff and freeze, saute with onion and sausage, chop and freeze for chili.  Chili.  Damn.  It's coming way too quick for me.

 

I tore off the rail and wainscot for two days figuring if I can't decide on a second color for all the trim, do away with it.  So I did. We planned on changing it to a different style anyway so once the walls are painted, maybe we will.  But it sure looks minimalistic and clean cut without it.  Even with 37 color samples on the walls.  So maybe we won't.

Went to the cemetery today to add fall flowers and a candle to my parents' grave.  Today is their anniversary.  As always, when removing the stationary vase liners filled with silk flowers on each side of the stone, I am concerned about hidden spiders.  I keep a large bag in the car to hold them just in case some creepy would escape into my car.  When we got home and I asked Mark to remove the flowers from the inserts, he found nothing.  Until he decided to shake the bag.  Inside was the biggest fricking spider I have seen in a long time.  Needless to say, he is no longer with us.  If that bag wasn't tied shut and he entered my car, either the vehicle or my heart would have crashed.

I make my own pumpkin spice blend by following the ratio on the can of Libby's pumpkin and store it.  For either bread, I use 2 1/2 - 3 tsp of it.  I like the stronger pumpkin flavor when using the entire can and only 1/2 cup oil or butter, but I then have a heavy bottom to the bread.   My friend spread this into two 8x8 pans instead of bread pans and it came out fine so I may do that next.  I also use the 2 full cups of shredded zucchini.

Well that took forever

I'm not a featherweight

I saw Vonna's post about sewing machines, namely, the vintage Singer Featherweight.  It looked like mine.  So I opened the case and thought it was.  But it wasn't.  The darn thing is heavy!  I checked the model numbers and mine begins with AG 516.  After WWII, the numbers start back up with AG 526. 

 

 

 

 

 

But still, it was mom's and she treasured it.  I do think they are pretty with the stenciling and the fancy silver.  I have attachments for it but I use my other machine, not quite as vintage but still an old metal model.  And I still have the black Singer toy in box and it works.

 

 

 

 

Another reason I am not personally a featherweight ....

Crumble Feta cheese over and drizzle Ariston balsamic.  I have reduced balsamic to a syrup and it tastes just as good, but Ariston is handy, already a syrup.

As for the PS charts, I was bombarded with requests for purchase from the entire lot to individual numbers.  I haven't priced them yet and will post a sale date, and let you know then.  Not easy because some of the charts are getting a low price and some quite a bit higher.  This Sparrow linen sold for $30 + ship for a 13 x 17 piece!  When items are no longer available it makes it more difficult.   Hopefully I will work it out this weekend, I know I keep saying that, but my sister still isn't doing much for herself even though the doc was very pleased with all her results.  She has a habit of milking it for all its worth.  She has never ever talked about after she is gone, but she sure has been doing that lately.  She's getting rid of things, giving items to family members, calling friends she has neglected.  Weird.

 

Anyway, for sure this weekend I will let you know about the chart sale for PS, the samplers another time.  It will probably be here and on my Facebook page. 

 

There isn't much I can do to help those in the path of the storm, please be overly cautious and take no chances.

I don't think he wants me to sell the Prairie Schoolers.  For those of you asking, these are all OLD charts starting with #9 and going to #88, but not every leaflet in sequence.  In case there is one you've been looking for, here are the numbers.

Air conditioning in 90 degree heat three days ago and the furnace is now running along with three days of solid rain.  It should stop Tuesday.  Let's see how I make out with the wheelchair in windy rain today for her doc appt.  There is never a handicapped space open.  She will be getting her flu shot and sometimes I wonder how much protection it offers.  Last early spring she was the sickest from influenza than ever in her life.  Several stitchers were too, and many had the shot.  They start the vaccine production so early that it doesn't always contain the right strains which is what happened last year.  We still get them, but with today's advances in medicine why can't they offer more current protection with second doses?  Or something.

Climbing out of a slump

may be helped by organization.  When I don't feel like stitching, having to search for a chart in random piles, look for the right color of linen (and what is that count?), try to find the right pre-cut size, and then wonder why floss bags are missing from their chest, does not spur my mojo.  So while going through what to keep I decided to finally make some changes.  The clear sheet protectors were purchased long ago to protect the hundreds of freebie copies and small designs and group them in 3 ring binders.  So many of you organize your charts and I should have followed your lead years ago! I filled two paper grocery bags with duplicates and downloads to discard and now have a binder for Christmas, freebies, and a small one with tips and help, many hand written notes from readers.  Really nice to just flip through and see my options.  This thinning was done once before yet I still kept so many designs thinking I may one day like them enough to stitch.  If I haven't by now, I won't, and out they went.  I don't know if this will encourage me to pick up a needle again but making it more enjoyable to browse charts is certainly a step in the right direction.  No more loose papers in folders.  The large samplers will stay in a box, I'm only thinking of smalls right now.  To make this even easier, I may insert linen pieces between the two pages in the protector.

 

In addition to a box of old PS designs, this pile will be leaving, and I haven't gone through my completed charts yet, many of which I want to keep and that puzzles me.  I've already stitched it, why do I need it?  A few I may want to stitch again, but certainly not the large ones.  Yet there is an attachment.  My very first sampler charts decades ago, Safrona Ager, Lydia Bond, Hannah Breed, were thrown away and I wish I hadn't done that.  The charts are still available and I've considered buying them, but why?  To keep in a file?  I've resisted and do not plan to add charts already stitched to the stash (which is now very small).  The task of scanning and describing condition for so many will be a royal PITA.  Almost all are unused which helps.

 

I'm glad I finally organized somewhat and found a few designs that I may want to work on.  Are they new to me?  Nope.  Already stitched them but since I don't really want any other pieces for display, they will be gifts or offers.  It may feel good to pull that thread through the linen, but it may not.  I've been putting it off like a trip to the dentist, and honestly, if it wasn't for blogging and the FB stitching groups, I would pack everything away.

And the sorting begins

Do you have one or two smalls that you love more than the others?  I do.  And I like having them on cords so I can move them at whim.  I hang them from frame corners, knobs, hooks, basket handles, window candles, sconces, sash locks, just about anywhere but on a cat.

 

 Especially when it's hot.

 

Or a drastic change in a day to cool and rainy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So I started thinking about what I want to keep and what I want to sell.  Here's what I chose to keep, and my favorite smalls.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Chums was a gift and never leaving but it shows how tiny the sampler is.  The rest of the pieces are iffy right now.  I know you think I'm off kilter for selling and you're probably right.  I've sold larger samplers before, and had no regrets, but that doesn't mean I won't now.  Why not put them away and think about it later?  Good idea, they would not take much room to store.  But I still feel the need to clean the slate and refresh.  Now, the samplers may be a different story.  The work involved was considerable for their size but there are some that I once loved and are now just tolerable.  Not because of the design, mostly because of my fabric choice or it has been hanging for too long and I am just tired of it.  That happens a lot with me which is why I am always wanting to change something in the house.  Usually by the time a contractor comes or a color is chosen, enough time has passed that I have already moved on with a new plan!

 

Shaker Woods Antique show in Columbiana Ohio is this weekend and we are getting an all day rain, they already cancelled day two.  Such a shame.  We go all summer with hardly a drop and when vendors set up, mostly outside, this happens.  It's needed but did it have to be this weekend?

Oh those wheelchairs

Mark insisted we go for blood work today since he is golfing Friday.  Parking and then going inside to get a wheelchair, back to car for her, back inside, is a hassle because of the design of this idiotic medical center.  Handicapped parking (or any other) is no where near the entrance made to be more grand than functional.  They were packed and as much as I am indecisive, my husband is impatient.  But we stayed.  Until we found out that the doctor failed to sign the orders.  Back to the car, to the doctors, back to the clinic.  Still packed.  I chose the wheelchair with less width since I was scraping the door frames last time.  Much better.  As we sat waiting to be called, I told Carole to put the foot rests down.  No.  She didn't want to because she always lifts her feet or dangles them from those very short chubby legs.  I said, put the damn foot rests down.  No.  I couldn't reach them from the position of my seat so I reached over with her cane to push the flippers down.  Unfortunately, it slipped off and, well, let's just say she had more color in her face than I've seen in weeks.  And I started that laugh again that should never be done in public.  It's not loud, it just creates a very unattractive face scrunch that scares small children followed by a low snort.  Then she started.  And we hear our names being called so I unlock the wheel and start pushing the chair.  If I would have unlocked both wheels, she would not have done a semi circle and hit into the magazine table.  Now the scrunch is severe, squinting my eyes almost shut, causing me to misjudge the door.  We made it home safely, but needed to change our pants.

The Ebay crap shoot

Hi folks.  Guess who's feeling better?  Yep.  I think we are over the hump.  Unfortunately, mine has increased enough to not allow zipping.  Needed to put on a decent outfit for a funeral home visit and ended up searching for the biggest tunic I have to cover that hump!  It doesn't matter if I am facing forward, backward, or sideways, waist to crotch looks the same at all angles.  I am so angry with myself for gaining it all back.  Just because there was anxiety and stress did not mean I had to stuff my face at every turn and explode out of my pants.  Dammit.

 

So I picked out a few charts (Plantation Sampler, Ann Medd) and checked Ebay for average prices.  Take a look at the discrepancy here.  One went for 67.99,  a week later another was 70.00, so a seller decided it would be a good time to list the same chart and only received a few bucks.  All three were sold this past August.  I check the completed listing box to see what sold and for what price.   Always a crap shoot on Ebay isn't it?

It's hot.  Ooooooh baby is it hot.  If there weren't so many bugs at night I would stay on the swing until midnight.

 

I was a little upset when we came home earlier today and found a pamphlet sticking out of my new expensive door, INSIDE.  It seems the famous religious group that visits homes decided to push my weather stripping away from the door and insert their material.  I was furious.  If they come back, I will show them the damage to the now crinkled vinyl.  That takes a lot of nerve!

 

Carole's blood work is Friday and doc on Monday so I have Thursday to stay home and rid the house of chocolate.  Of course, there are two ways to accomplish that.

Once again,

thank you for all your help and suggestions.  She has tried a few products including Theraworks and Hyland's leg cramp pills, both of which did help.  For a brief period of time.  She is scheduled for blood work this week and the doc does not want her taking any supplements or vitamins until he sees what her mineral levels are after the massive diuretics so she can't take the mag pills.  Protein drinks, bananas, avocado, tonic water and a few other natural remedies aren't changing the intensity.  Doc is OK with electrolyte drinks to help but that's all until after the results.  I will order the topical Amish remedy on Amazon and give it a try along with the soap.  The cramps have become secondary to insomnia.  Now she can't sleep at all!  She said her entire upper body feels like restless leg syndrome and she can't settle.  This happened before and Valerian helped, Melatonin helped, but she still needs clearance before taking so hopefully that will happen next week. 

 

Tomorrow I am staying home all day.  No Meals on Wheels delivery to Carole.  I bought plenty of excellent frozen dinners that prepare in 10 or 15 minutes in one pan, and she is certainly well enough for a quick and simple task.  Bertolli's Chicken Carbonara is SO good along with other complete meals in minutes.  Maybe I'll send Mark out to find a produce stand with corn.  My favorite is Bodacious but August was busy and we missed the entire harvest.  First summer I didn't have cob corn twice a week.  Instead, I ate more chocolate and gained another 8#.  Whoa Nelly!  Time to pull back.

I'm making Brier Hill pizza tonight, Carole is craving it.  She's a little better but still too weak, and the night leg cramps are killers.  Pickles appear to work somewhat and the over the counter remedies are failing.  She is cautious of Gatorade, seems to make them worse.  Needs to watch the sodium because of the fluid retention so she is smack between a rock and a hard place.  All in good time, things will work out.  But not for my MN cousin who is now in hospice care.  Never heard of frontotemporal dementia before this.

 

Hope everyone has an enjoyable long weekend.  Can't believe it's September.  Still warm, but the month means Fall and that just pops my balloon.
