Batting, bargains, and brains

Hello everyone.   Hope you're having the wonderful whiteless winter that I am.  I haven't been stitching, just ordering!  It certainly takes a long time to view all designers online and even then you can't possibly see everything you would like to order.  My "want" list of projects that I've seen on your blogs is still missing so I just browsed and placed orders for what I saw, assuming the list would appear soon after.  Nope. I am really pleased that I found the elusive BOAF Gold Santa to complete my series of four.  I'll show him as soon as I get him!
I went to JoAnn's today because I ran out of the fill I use only to find it's no longer available.  The wall area had large bolts of batting so I checked them out and found exactly what I wanted.   I'm not keen on loose fiberfill and lumps.  This is a smooth and dense thermal bonded quilt batting 48" wide.  It's a thick even density and perfect for the envelope method, cutting the edges on a slight bevel.   I purchased the 7 ounce and 9 ounce, so I can use two layers, or just one, and it is really nice stuff.  I may still use the loose fill in the corners first but between the stiff interfacing and this dense batt, I doubt if it will be necessary.
I also bought these see-through envelopes to store the interfacings with the instructions for each type easily readable.  I got tired of searching for separate instructions (some are steam, some not) and wondering which I was using.

I visited James Creek after Christmas and got what I thought were some real deals on a few items.  These metal candle holders were only $5 each!

The reason I haven't started the new sampler is mainly because of working on the sampler labels for my boxes.  I wanted to have them on Etsy by now, but my goodness it takes hours and hours to get the changes and sizing right.  The other reason - I can't find a postage scale!  Not even Staples has any in stock and my local post office has none at the time.  I need to figure weight for the various sizes for shipping charges.  I tried ordering through Amazon and the same settings that prevent me from leaving comments on some blogs is also preventing me from viewing Amazon.    I think I will take a break tomorrow, choose a linen color, start the sampler, and grill a few donuts.
I need to make a few extra $$$ to feed my herd.   Hard to take a decent photo at dusk through a window!  There are three over on the left by the trees.  They eat shelled corn and 2 loaves of white bread daily.  No wheat or whole grain!  Only white, even bagels and pita bread.
A note on the stuffed cabbage.....I was reminded by readers that there is another method.  Core your cabbage and freeze the entire head.  Whenever you decide to make the dish, take the cabbage out to thaw a few days in the fridge or overnight on the counter.  The freezer softens it and there is no need to boil!  Just carefully peel your leaves and roll.  Much easier.  But of course, I forgot!  Oh wait.  That reminds me.  I've been wacky since menopause but this memory thing is getting bad and worrisome.  I did some investigating and found a technical report on how your body uses and needs cholesterol.   Your brain is only 2% of your body weight but contains 25% of your cholesterol.  It affects memory and if you are interested you can read the reports here.  I started a statin 5 months ago, the first month it reduced my numbers by 70 points.  Maybe it's now too low, and even though doctors are not pharmacists, they usually dismiss side effects.  Every body is different and therefore no drug reacts the same in each patient.  I am definitely checking into this.
I'll be back tomorrow (if I remember) with Random Generator's winner.  All the names are randomly assigned a number and then one will be drawn.  Tomorrow is the last day to enter, so go to the previous post and leave your comment!  Have a good evening....

Marly,

The USPS sells scales - here's the link to the page: https://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10052&categoryId=10000022&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10000002&top_category=10000002&WT.ac=10000022. No, I am not a USPS employee! Can't wait to see what you've been buying to stitch. ~Ann

The candle holders are so pretty -- and such a great deal! Love your header pic. And the boxes, of course! Good luck finding a postage scale. I'd love to find one myself!

Hi Marly,

love your blog header picture! I keep putting off buying that Stacy Nash pocket chart, even after seeing you stitch it up so nicely, but now you're tempting me again with the header picture!

Glad you're having fun ordering stuff and found the elusive Gold Santa. And at least you've stitched the others. I have had all four for years and never gotten around to doing them. Maybe this will be the year, thanks to your inspiration!

Listen, my hubby has been on every kind of statin known to man since his heart attack 15 years ago. His bad ldl was always too high, and the good (hdl) was always too low. After researching cod liver oil and fish oil, for relief of joint pain (him and me both), we decided to start taking them both. The liquid kind...he takes a tablespoon of each oil each night (it's lemon flavored and not nasty), and I just take the cod liver oil. Marly, I kid you not, after being on them for about 6 months, his bloodwork finally came back with good results! I almost cried when I read them, we were both so shocked as we have never seen his numbers so good. And even though I am a bit {ahem} "fluffy", my cholesterol numbers are perfect. OK, all this to say, he's finally just down to a very low dose of Crestor (lowest he's ever been on) and I really do believe within another 6 months he will be able to come off of that. You may want to check it out is the bottom line here :-) Not to mention, he takes nothing (Rx wise) for joint pain any longer.

Love those boxes. Can't wait to see them on Etsy. I always use my food scale to weigh things...it goes up to ten pounds...probably need to get a real official one someday, lol!

xoxo

Just wanted to add...the fish oil capsules have never given him the same results and I read a bunch of stuff debating the difference and talking about how they do not work as well in our bodies as the liquid does. We take the Carlson brand, lemon flavored.

Interesting info about memory and cholesterol. The article you cited is six years old, and I'd be curious whether any subsequent research corroborates these findings. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 17 years ago, and I quickly noticed memory problems, which are a hallmark of fibro, thought to be due to poor sleep/exhaustion. I want to study the article more closely because I wonder if my high cholesterol - which I haven't gotten rechecked - has anything to do with the sleep issues. The comments by Andrea are also interesting, and I might try what she suggests because statins are known to cause problems for fibro patients. At this point, I'm not even willing to let one of those little pills pass through my lips. Anyway, love the candle holders and the boxes! And the herd of deer is spectacular.

Good to hear Gold Santa is still available, PS does discontinue a lot of their patterns.
Beautiful candle holders Marly, what a find!
I do love your deer, mine are lovely too but I don't feed them, there is enough for them in the garden! In fact they do the pruning for me LOL.

Love those candle holders! Thanks for the idea on storing the pellon info. I just have the lightweight interfacing at the moment (have more on the way) but the instructions went by the wayside a long time ago.

Yes, I'm enjoying our snowless winter, too, Marly--it sure seems odd, though! Wow--that is quite a herd of deer. Can I give ours directions and send them up to join yours? They are just destroying our bushes and gardens. And last night on the way to work, I just barely missed hitting a car who had braked for a deer who ran into its path.

I'll have to check out the quilt batting for stuffing ornaments... always good to try something different. And that's great that you found the gold BOAF Santa--I bought the green one last month after seeing your cute finish of him. Couldn't resist that pretzel he is holding!!

I use quilt batting as well. You have quite a herd going there. Love the new blog header.
