Hello people. I'm having a bit of a stash fit. For a few days, I've been trying to organize the mess in the room where my charts and supplies are kept. I've done this before. And before that. But nothing changes! I keep sorting and folding and rolling and putting the material back in the drawers. Half of if is mystery linen that I've bleached and dyed, much of it is soft and silky, and some are new pieces gifted to me or purchased that I love. Is it a sin to burn linen? I made a small pile of bad dye jobs, flimsy see through pieces, and small counts, and topped it off with my lighter. The way I was told to check a piece of fabric to see if it is wool or a blend, was to take a match to a corner. If it curls up and melts, it's not natural fabric/wool. Then why did some of this linen melt?
I have it narrowed down to several bags by counts, which on some is just a guess. Is this the right way to find the count? I go over and under every two threads and then measure. What's the easiest way?
Here's the results after the fire. But I was missing my yardage from Scarlet Letter. Unbleached and Golden Streak. And where were all the larger pieces? I forgot that I have two boxes, one holding larger charts and one for smalls, many with the linen.
I think my option right now is to box the pieces I don't plan on using and store them in a place I will never remember. Can't put it behind the TV. But at least I won't be sorry that I pitched it all. There isn't much difference between 28 and 30, but I still prefer 30 or 32 and 3/4 of the pieces are 28. I'm hoarding some smaller pieces of fabulous colors in 35/36, and look forward to using them. So not only do I have a problem cutting into a yard or large piece of linen, I can't let go of the outcasts.
Not many were interested in the santa charts so I just chose a name and will send those off tomorrow.
As I'm typing this, a headline is glaring from the nearby newspaper. I don't bring up things like this, but I'm getting sick of these types of findings, and this disgrace was committed to VETERANS. I am livid.
"A two month Pittsburgh Tribune-Review investigation found Veterans Administration workers or contractors committed 14,215 privacy violations at 167 facilities from 2010 through May 31, victimizing at least 101,018 veterans and 551 agency employees. Some had photos of their anatomy posted on social media; others had their stolen IDs used to make fraudulent credit cards."
How many do you think will lose their jobs? None. Never do. You won't even hear about it on the network news. Just move them somewhere else. I think the government should stay shut down and start paying firms where employees are supervised, have consequences to actions, enough work to keep them busy so they don't have time for this garbage, and the managers in charge of them can also be fired.
I was going to leave you with a photo of cat #4 but I'm too angry now. I think I'll grab some linen and a lighter.
Thanks for visiting.

Good for you Marly ... my kind of Gal.
I would like to can all of them. My blood pressure runs wild when I listen to these atrocities ... all so inhumane and ANTI AMERICAN!
GOD BLESS AMERICA,
Barb
I just grab my ruler and count the holes with my needle.
Does cat#4 have a name yet?

Either way works - that photo looks like 30 count to me; right?
I read my husband the VA blurb you wrote. As a Navy veteran & retired (33 years) VA employee himself, he had always told me about instances at work where incompetent employees were not fired, no matter what, but instead just shuffled around because their union raises hell & fights for them to stay employed. It's a shame ... it really is.
My daughter works for the Navy and tells me about a few people there that are SO incompetent and lazy but they won't fire them because they don't do that! hello??? I want a job there!! Watch out with the lighter... you might get flamed! Hugs!
I have a drawer full of unknown linen also. Everytime I open that drawer, I get a headache! Is there anybody, anywhere in government that can get anything done correctly? My employer lets people go if they miss 3 sick days in a year!! The entire government is very sad.

Love your header pic btw! I count linen count by just counting the holes. As for those headlines -- I can't read them anymore. I get so upset just reading the news.
I am with you! Our vets deserve a lot better than they are getting, and yes, they should keep the government shut down, all of it. The private sector always does a better job than those clowns.
Can you use your linen as backings for projects, pillows, etc? That is what I would do. But I am a newbie and not very knowledgeable yet! rashorter@embarqmail.com
The government is angering me too and also scaring me. I would like to punish them all, but unfortunately if they stay shut down our income might take a drastic cut next month! My husband is a 100% disabled vet and we count on that check to live. It's just awful how they don't seem to care. Guess I will just keep stitching to keep calm. Maybe we should send the government some floss and linen so they can relax and get along with each other!
I count my linen with a needle and only 1/2 inch and double it. You do know that you can sell the 28ct. linen or any that you don't want on ebay.
I totally agree with all of you!
Also, Marley, you are correct in that you cut off a bit and burn. A wool will turn to powder and just rub it away. Any poly in it and it will melt stiff like. Totally different feel. I do this all the time as I am a quilter and wool appliquér trying to learn cross stitch!
Thank you for sharing, never would have known about this terrible act of disrespect. (not shared here in California) It is so sad there are idiots like this employed anywhere...wonder if they would like some help being packed out of our country?
I use a ruler and count the threads within the inch. I used a piece of fabric recently and didn't realize it was an uneven count until I was halfway completed with the stitching. So frustrating and someone had given me alot of this fabric. I think it's all going to meet the lighter too.
Marly, Please say you aren't considering throwing away linen or totally setting fire to the whole bunch. For someone on a limited(zero) budget that would be like Christmas and heaven opening a tub/drawer and seeing linen...no matter the count, etc. I think you would have a lot of takers if you offered it. I would be more than happy to pay for the postage. Just an idea.
Paula
p.s. don't get me started on the government...
The Ohio Reformatory (prison) for Women gladly accepts donations of stitching supplies. They operate a teaching program as a kind of honors activity/incentive. Just a thought.
Good grief! So hard to believe that any of those idiots in DC don't realize how little we all think of them...so sad that the whole world is watching this shameful mess...ANYONE who is not performing their job should lose it..government especially! We are paying their salaries!
