Greetings. We are in the process of tearing out the kitchen cabinets, raising them, and installing in a little different layout. It's been almost 8 months and I have given up on a qualified craftsman showing up. Not happy. So I sit here working on the computer while listening to my husband cuss, and lending a hand when he needs me. We will have to finish the other rooms ourselves too.
I wanted to show what I found at Antiques in the Woods. The show is no where near Simple Goods caliber and many booths are country crafts, glassware, or overpriced flea market items. But it's nice to visit and browse the little cabins amidst the tall canopy of oaks while eating an apple dumpling.

The first item I found was this small butter churn. I don't know if it's very old and don't care. It's sweet, super dirty, and smelly inside. So I scrubbed it inside and out which made it 20 shades lighter, sprayed the wood with my linen sprays, and put my leftover candle wax inside. That usually permeates the dry wood after a while but the cleaning alone took care of the smell. .jpg)
The second item was this mallet.

I wanted a longneck gourd but didn't realize it was this long until I got home.
Then I found this very long wood thing (in the middle) and I am clueless regarding its purpose. I looked like a shepherd as our friend said, using this to help me walk on the gravel with my bum knees. Between this, the mallet, and the club looking gourd, several men stopped my husband and told him to be careful.

My final item, found on a final run through a nice cabin, is this tall wooden cylinder turned from one piece with threaded lid.

It won't stay here but I need to put it where it won't be in the way, because I will surely lose it in the shuffle. I think it's my favorite item. We stopped at my sister's on the way home and she liked the large metal sunflower stake that we got for her.

It is a shame how craftsman can be so indifferent to what they are hired to do. I am sure you and the hubby will get it all sorted out...right??? Love your special finds!
Wow that gourd is long - how do they grow them like that! Have you ever visited the Yankee Peddler in Ohio? It's going on in September - hoping to get over to see it!

I really like the pieces that you found.. They are so unusual.
I think it "stinks" that you can't find someone to do the carpentry work that you need and do it they way it should be done..
Keeping you and Carole in my prayers. So sorry about her kitty. Our "Daffy" kitty lived to be 20.. He was orange and such a baby and a real sweet heart.. I know how it hurts to lose one that old..

I was reading your post and scrolled down to see the mallet and my eye immediately went to my fireplace. I have the exact mallet. I've had it for more than 40 yrs. and it was old when I got it from my Dad. Loved your buys and your displays are wonderful. Connie L

I love your new finds. Is that last wood container with the screw on lid an old tea caddy ? Or perhaps a spice jar of some sort. Super interesting. Love old things too ! Pa antique store have the best things !!
Hi, Marly, wonderful goodies from the antique show. I have one of those long wooden mallets, have had it for years, and never knew what is was for. I just have it hanging by a fireplace. I am hoping that this is the week that your sister starts to improve...she has been through a lot. I know what you mean about getting people to come and work. I have that problem too, and maybe ever worse. I think once they see it is an old house they don't want to have anything to do with it. Hugs to you, have a good week. Melinda

We did our own cabinets, not the best job in the world, but at least they are new and I can use them;) My husband does the work and he has a tendency to ding and bang things so he fixes one thing and breaks a few others, lol. Love your new goodies, great finds.

Oh what great finds. Antiques like these always interest me because you know the person who made it had a special thing in mind for it's use. It's fun to try and guess what that might be.

What wonderful goodies you brought home! It really is too bad about your kitchen woes; I fear we are quickly approaching a time when good craftsmen will be nearly impossible to find (as you have already discovered in your neck of the woods). Hang in there.
I really like the cylinder, what a find.
The long wooden things were used to stomp cabbage down in crocks when making sauerkraut. A layer of cabbage is placed in the crock, then a layer of salt, and then stomped on with the club thing - then repeat until the crock is jammed full. But I like what the men had to say to your husband!!
