Am I the only one that is getting a notice stating a low threat virus is blocked every time I visit a blogger page?
To anonymous Carole, YES! The Linen Sampler in Niles Ohio was a wonderful shop. Loved visiting, probably my favorite. A close second was Friends Count in Cortland Ohio, and runner up was Count on Cindy in Boardman/Canfield.
For Amanda, I can't contact you, but wanted to clarify the paint samples. The paper swatches at the store for stains are tiny compared to those for paint. You can have almost any paint color swatch mixed in a sample jar, but not for exterior stain. Some do, but not the brands that the painter recommended for quality. SW and Cabot can only be purchased in gallons. That's an expensive test!
Benjamin Moore may offer stain samples, but they sold my sister the wrong paint for her house. Even after the painter questioned the new product (Advance) they insisted it was the latest and greatest for applying over oil based exterior paint. It started peeling off in sheets within a year and we called, emailed, they did nothing. The product was new and now is labeled for interior only. Too late. Was it the clerk's fault? No. The store's OWNER is the person she and the painter spoke with. I was so ticked that they did not even offer new primer or paint or come out to look at the house, especially since the fault lies with the store, that I refuse to purchase their products. Her house is a mess and she does not have the money for a remedy and new paint job.
Almost every intense stain I've seen in photos has been on a saltbox, not our house style, but still doable. Black houses sound evil don't they? But it's not a deep glossy black, the stain is soft and weathers. If nothing else works out, I may just opt for it. After seeing these (and all the others I've saved) I am leaning heavily. You're right about the black stain, Marly. I live in a small NE city with lots of colonial-era houses, some of which are stained black. They're lovely.
Love the dark gray/grey. I always wanted a house that was dark gray/grey just before someone said " that's black". Love all the same color, I was voted down when i suggested for the house i live in now. Not so much voted down as told NO.
There was a time my blogger friends were getting the message and so they emailed me instead.
Haven't had anyone tell me lately though that it is happening again.
Goodness I'm so sorry your st=ister had to deal with incompetent store owners/clerks...not right that they didn't stand behind it. Possibly the Better Business Bureau could or would have helped.
I love blackish houses...they are the quintessential 'Colonial' color in my eyes.
Someone I know on FB painted their home a black and they used an oil based stain.
When we moved into the home we are in - we resided in a really dark brown - between and brown and black and loved it!!

There's a house, built circa 1850, in the tiny village near where I grew up, that is this color! It's been that color as long as I can remember, and it's lovely. Striking and different and looks very age-appropriate. I've always loved it.

Those homes will always be noteworthy in form and color.
I do love the black stain. I would never have thought of it but it looks great on all those homes.
May I ask a totally silly / out of the subject question ? Are you allowed to paint your house the way you want ? I mean here you can't choose the colour, you can't even repaint windows or your shutters or garage panel or door (or change those)... without filling a whole bunch of papers, with pictures, map, sky view and God only knows what else...It's counting for paint on concrete, paint on wood, roof tiles, change from vinyl to wood (or opposite), change the plain to "design" ones, and surely many other things I can't even imagine. It drove me totally crazy when they asked for more than 20 papers, colour samples, etc JUST for I can paint a tiny fence in my garden...I am so fed up with it that I'm planning to do it straight without doing any paper, and see what happens. So you can imagine how amazed I am to see you might be able to just do whatever you want... My country is having a bunch of stupid laws... it's should be SO exciting to decide the colour we want ! I believe I never saw a black house here, I saw a tiny one very long time ago when I was visiting a friend in another country. It was a dull black, not shiny I mean, and it was really nice.

The SW gallon paint thing is bad news indeed. I'm in Florida, and they make a paint formulated especially for Florida. It holds its color about as long as paint in northern states does; everything else lasts about half as long - if you're lucky. My house is battle-ship gray. I'm wanting to put a lighter blue-gray on the house, and move the darker gray to the eaves where I keep getting algae. (Everything molds in Florida.) The algae really shows up on the white eaves, but the gray should camouflage it. Clever solution - I think. Don't cedar shingles naturally turn a very dark gray? I've seen houses like that, and they were gorgeous.
Can you post the addresses of the shops in Ohio? I was beginning to think that there were no shops anywhere near Western NY state. I googled them and couldn't find the ones you mentioned.
I will spend the rest of my day dreaming about which house I would pick to live in. They are all beautiful. My house is a 1.5 storey gambrel out in the middle of flat corn and soybean land. When it was being built, people were taking pictures of it constantly as it is not your typical Illinois flatland house. Imagine the looks we will get when I convince my husband to stain it black! I love it.
I'm loving that color and a lot of those houses remind me of yours. Go for it.

The black stained houses are beautiful! I prefer the grayish look of the more weathered ones, but it appears that this is a stain choice that just looks better year after year.
LOVE the black! Just recently read an article about black houses in Amsterdam. One of those is the Whipple House in Ipswich, I believe...My dream is to live in a First Period home...

My favorite, if that is possible, was the third house color. They are all so beautiful. I love black as my Windsor chairs are that. Have also decorated with some black chests and tables. Love it. You can't loose with the black.
The virus threat warnings might be on those blogs that do not have a secure site redirect on their page. It will have “https” if it’s secured. It’s not a problem visiting those pages that don’t have it, as you aren’t entering personal information, like credit card numbers on blog pages.
Hi, just wanted to say how flattered I am to have our home pictured among your favorites! We used a paint, not a stain from Benjamin Moore, called "Night Horizon". Although not quite as dark as I had originally wanted, we're very happy with the results. I'm so sorry about your bad experience. The store should most definitely have reimbursed you.
