Hiya. You know I'm not one to make decisions. And also that those long awaiting decisions are never final. So what do I do with the Beale wreath? I love this wreath but a beautiful formal looking finish isn't me. This design is not something I want to age but I also don't want fussy. Fabrics are limited to JoAnn's selection of which there are none to my liking. I have several upholstery samples that may work, but I'm not happy with them.
One is a beautiful iridescent shade that matches the DMC 356, but not enough to make a bias piping and it's also too elegant. The tone on tone stripe is my favorite, but I don't want striped piping. The heavy nubbed fabric has several colors from the piece but it's really too rough looking. So let's change from piping to braid. Ick. I don't like braid. So shiny and formal. I know you can make it from DMC but I never have and don't feel it would be heavy enough. But it's still an option. Hey. Let's do something reckless. My Krylon Matte spray that I use on my printed labels is also used on silk flowers and artwork so.......let's see if we can take the shine off the braid. Yep. Left is natural light and right is lamp light.
The only color I found is this odd greenish gold. Gold is too yellow, red is too bright, green was emerald, and on and on. These 355 and 356 colors are not red and nothing looked good, plus the greens are all different so this was my choice. The plus is, a piped edge can't be removed but the braid sewn by hand can be. Now I'm not so concerned about the edge because I have that option. But what an odd color - so what about the backing? This afternoon I will be digging and tossing linen trying to find a matching piece. I think it's the only solution. If I make a braid from the 356 or any of the bottom's thread colors, it would look the best but I don't want to mess with that now. Or maybe I will. Or not. Depends on the mood. You know what? I will look it up, learn it, and do it. Damn. With which color? I knew hoped this would happen. Many times when I'm typing a post, things become more clear and everything I've done to that point ends up a waste of time. So just ignore everything written above. Linen backing, DMC braid. Or piping. Hey - if I don't have to worry about it matching the backing I can pick a fabric for piping. Here we go.
Another decision. My Christmas fun has always been to drop a $10 bill behind a youngster that looks unhappy in a store throughout the weeks in December. Then I would quietly tell them that they dropped their money, or found some. The look on their faces was a gift! Well, the last year or two is much different and you can certainly tell the changes in our society. I've decided to stop.
I plan on giving a solid maple dining table and chairs to a family at the battered women's shelter, and someone else will get the complete set of these old Poppytrail dishes. These women leave the abuse with nothing and must start over. My mom's beautiful wool coats and jackets are still in her closet and I can't seem to let them go. But I must. So someone at the shelter will also receive new coats. And mom's new shoes that she never got to wear and I've kept, will go to the nursing home for someone that needs comfort shoes they can't afford. But as I type this, the tears are telling me I may not be able to do this! But I must.
I plan on doing some inside decorating today, maybe hanging garland to hide the wires and studs.
Enjoy your weekend, stay safe, bake something!

Linen backing... Perfect.... Got to have dmc cording to get a proper match..... I love this piece and have always admired it..... Speaking of admire, I did receive my box and it is perfect!!!! It is perched on my shelf in e craft room for me to admire as I sew..... Ty Ty! Part with the shoes.... Knowing you are helping someone else will far exceed the emotion you're having of holding on to them...
You are so generous in so many ways. I will be looking forward to seeing the finished stitched wreath too. Glad it is not my decision but knowing you it will be perfecto.
Keep the Christmas Spirit with Peace & Blessings,
Barb
Could you please tell me the name of the Santa postman pattern shown on one of your earlier post. I love it! You had made it into a pillow and shown above the mantle in a basket.
The wreath is gorgeous and your final choices will be perfect. I drive myself crazy picking out trims too! Your generosity is wonderful and I'm sure will be greatly appreciated.
Marly, you are not the only one with tears in your eyes with this post. I as a young girl in 4th grade with my 2 younger brothers and mother went to the women's shelter. It was very scary. GOD BLESS YOU MARLY for thinking of these women in these horrible situations. Trust me, no one wants to go to these places unless it is the last resort. Your gifts WILL make a difference.♥
I love your wreath, Marly, and I know however you choose to finish it will be stunning. I'd go with my gut. Seems to always work out best.
I also can relate to parting with your Mom's things, I'm hanging on to suits that were my Dad's. I can't seem to donate them. They should go on to bless another man but it's so hard. Like you, I will do it. I must also.
Love the wreath...can't help on the finish-I thought every idea you had was great! I'm sure every one of those donations would be greatly appreciated by those who receive them. I know how hard it is to empty that closet.--Jan
I'm glad typing out the blog post has helped you decide on the finishing for the wreath. Can't wait to see the results. You're so sweet to try to make things special for those in need. But it does sound as if you need to hang on to your mom's things a bit longer. Hugs to you. I know how it is. Take your time to let go.
Many hugs to you, dear friend. I hope all the generosity you show others will return to you 100 fold.
Marly, the joy you will feel knowing that your and your mom's
gifts will so brighten some woman's life is immeasurable!
The wreath....go with your gut...it always is a winner. I have a box on my desk, on my "stitching" table next to my rocker and one in my sewing room....I am one "happy camper"
(change that, one "happy stitcher"
Just think of what happiness you are giving and what happiness you will
receive in return!
Many blessings...
Years ago me and my oldest DD ended up at a womens shelter in Colorado (my family is in Ohio and had no idea), it was a scary time and sweet people like you made it a little easier on us. This is difficult for you I know; but you are going to make so many others happy.
Hugs, Shar
God bless you Marly and those you will be helping with your generosity. Such a loving way to honor the memory of your Mom.
If you are worried about DMC being too thin or too shiny for a braided cording on the edge, you should try perle cotton. It comes in so many colors and doesn't have the sheen. Of course depends on whether you have a place to buy it within your timeframe to finish this. A lot of needlepoint shops carry good selections. Just a thought..........
Marly ~
I'm sure your finish will be perfect, no matter what you choose.
How kind of you to help so many people in need. It will be greatly appreciated.
Hugs :)

Oh Marly....my boxes arrived and they are so sweet! I'll be playing in my house today to find them a special place.
Your wreath is so pretty...can't wait to see what decide on for a finish.
Your generosity is to be admired...the table and chairs...the shoes...wonderful! I lost my Father twenty eight years ago...hanging in my hall closet is his beautiful black cashmere top coat. That and his wool bathrobe will be with me for the duration.

The Beale wreath is gorgeous and I love that backing fabric you have. Very old school!! That's wonderful that you are donating to a battered women's shelter. They need every bit of help they can get!
