Contrary Mary

Hiya.  Hope everyone is doing fine and dandy today.  Finally getting back to stitching after a few days of distractions.
I moved on to the body and made so many errors that I decided to start the bargello on the other side.   This stitch pattern is not difficult at all once you get it lined up properly.  The borders consisting of cross and stem stitch will be next.  When I encounter too many frogs, I will move back to the middle.

While making the piece look presentable for a photo, I noticed lines in the linen from a fold.
Since most of my fabric is more than 20 years old, this happens often.  I never even realized at that time the damage folds can do.  You can see the vertical and horizontal in this photo but they won't be noticed when stitched.
Decision has been made on the flooring.  After visiting the only place that would offer pine, putting up with the looks and smirks, I decided to forget it.  It was split, cupped, and bowed and barely enough to do the project.  After seeing that, I didn't want to take the chance of ordering without seeing the final product.  So a compromise was found in knotty oak.  Yep.  Oak with knots and a few defects.  The width I wanted was 3 times the cost and at this stage in life and all the other projects coming up, not worth it.   Four week lead time which makes my hub nervous - way too much time for changes.  Nope.  It's done and I'm not even going to think about it anymore.  If the kitchen guy fails me again, I will need to hire someone else for that too.
***
I came across the doilies and tablecloths that I had put away from mom, aunts, and purchases.  I need to get rid of all of them since I will never use them, except for the pieces mom made.  These weren't hers, but are a few of my favorites.

All of these are smaller pieces with really nice details.

Today is a family dinner with stuffed shells and cake with whipped cream icing. Tonight I should be back to stitching.
Stay safe everyone - enjoy your day - thank you much for visiting!

Still loving this bargello piece you are stitching. Sending you anti frog vibes. Glad you got your floor figured out, I am sure that is a relief. CJ in OK

Love your newest piece -- the bargello and the colors are wonderful! And the old linens -- I have drawers and drawers full of them. Can't part with them and I do use them some of the time...yummy sounding dinner.

I sure wish you lived near me. My hubby is a contractor, and a VERY good worker! Even though winters are awful (no work) he stays very busy rest of the year! And each year new clients are referred from old ones! Loving those corners with the bargello stitching. I finally finished my Valentine Love pear yesterday. Going to do finishing tomorrow... Too many interruptions today. Keeping busy to work through the grief tho... We had snow last night...cold today! Hugs!

Love how Miss Mary is shaping up, folds and all. Her colors are great!

I'm so impressed with the linen pieces too. They remind me of an old plantation house down here my stitching group used to have retreats at. Hope they will find a good home!

Uh-oh! I think every piece of linen I own is folded. So how should I store it, roll it? It's in plastic bags too. Is that a bad thing?
I still have not started that bargello piece I won from you in a giveaway. I think I'm scared to. Everyone says how hard it is. I'll need to do some reading and video watching I think.
Did you say cake?
:D

Should I mention that my husband put down our PINE floor himself? We took a trip to the lumber yard and I approved each board - I couldn't have the number 1 boards. I needed character so we purchased almost all number 2 pine boards. He did tongue and groove them prior to putting them down. I LOVE it. It took a while for me to convince him to put reproduction square head nails in it! Of course it took some time since it needed to be stained and varnished. ~Ann

Love Mary, but you already knew that. :D Hope the frogs stay away. Interesting about your floor. I bet you're so glad to have the decision made. Yay! I love oak -- even knotty, I bet it'll be nice. Lovely doilies and tablecloths too.

Hi, Marly. The sampler is really taking on life, I still can't imagine doing that ziggy zaggy.
The doilies are beautiful!
I hope things go smoothly for you with the house.

Thank you for sharing the pictures of your heirloom linens. I especially love the one with the tatted edge and beautiful cutwork. I haven't done any heirloom sewing in a long time, but I continue to love the look, and hope, one day, to sew more heirlooms. (For the grandchildren I hope I'll have? Or perhaps I'll make lovely doilies and other linens for myself or to give away.)

Making decisions about remodeling is difficult. We replaced the floor in our kitchen about a year ago - or was it two? - and it took bringing home several samples before we could decide. We should have listened to our daughter, who knew exactly what would look best before we even started looking.

I like the Bargellow effect. Easy, simple but just super.

Mary is beautiful!!

Knotted pine is very popular here and is what is used the most. I'd hate putting up with those smirks, too--nothing drives me crazier. Good luck!

Your stitches are looking wonderful! I often wondered what folks did about the crease as most of my linen in purchased through the mail and all of it gets creased... creases happen with the embroidery hoop too no matter how loose it is. I was wondering if maybe wetting in a warm water to let the fibers relax... and then lightly press before using would help? Lovely doilies! I like the ones in the upper left and right... so many details...

Love the doilies photos, especially the close up of the tatted edging : ) Sorry about the aggravation that Mary is giving you. I've got some matches if you need them : )

Lines give it character...at least that is what I tell myself every time I look in the mirror. :o}

Beautiful progress so far Marly! I didn't know about the damage a fold could do to linen! Yikes! I better roll mine up then! Such pretty doilies and napkins. I love the one with the scalloped edge :D
