Hi everyone. I received my SL order and wanted to show you this unusual sampler.
None of my pictures are clear so I apologize, but it seems every piece of computer related equipment is becoming menopausal. I didn't know it can affect inanimate objects.
I was intrigued by the top of this piece and knew the stitches would be specialty, but I wanted it before it is no longer available. Has this happened to you?
Thinking the chart will always be there and one day it isn't? When I purchased Eunice Birchard it was only a matter of a few months before it was removed from the catalog. So glad I purchased when I did.
This top zigging and zagging is done in Irish Stitch, a straight stitch over 4 threads offset by 2 threads to create the pattern. Easy enough - that I can do.
The sides are very strange and consist of cross, stem, satin, with a blue stem creating the scallop outlines.
The bottom is another story. Freehand stem stitches all the way. Lots of instructions and I hope I have the patience! It's a relatively small sampler (7x11 on 28 count) and each scallop is done separately, so this is a good project if you want to try something different. I'm talking a good talk but I have to say, the more I read it, the more I'm wondering if this stitch wimp can handle it. I really like to buzz along with my alphabet and not have to constantly check the chart so this is really on the opposite side of comfort for me. But I have it and will certainly give it a try. Most all of the samplers were done by very young girls, but this all over the place piece could very well have been an older gal. Each scallop is different, the top zig zags differently on the opposite side, the stitches change constantly. She obviously couldn't make a decision. Hmmm. Menopausal?

Very unusual, Marly....will be a challenge, for sure (it surely would be for me)....you must promise not to wad it up and throw it across the room when you "screw up", as I would, but

What a great sampler! I know it's one I would never do if I was stitching a lot. I prefer x's and nothing else! I'm definitely a stitching wimp.

As you say Marly a very unusual sampler, I call that top piece bargello and it's lovely to stitch. Now I don't think the girl had Menopausal problems LOL!!

Very interesting sampler, Marly! It never ceases to amaze me that there are so many gorgeous SL samplers, I have perused the site over and over and yet seem to miss these gems! Will you be participating along in the Scarlet Letter Year challenge with this one? or one of your new SLs? It is a fun and inspiring group!
Love this pattern, Marly, but definitely not one I could think about stitching... :/ I can only imagine the mess I would make with those specialty stitches! Another stitch wimp here!!

I have this sampler pattern it is one of my favorites, I'm waiting to finish a few of my WIP before stating it. Just jump in you should have no problem with all the free hand stuff!
Oh wow, that one looks deceptively simple but it's quite complicated, isn't it? It's a beauty though. I hope you tackle it. I would love to see it stitched.
That is such a cute piece, Marly! It's too bad things don't show up that well on the SL site but Nicola's SL challenge has been great for showcasing the designs in greater detail.
I hope you will try this one out. At least it's not a big sized piece.

Hi Marly! Love the sampler...I used to do needlepoint eons ago and bargello was an easy and fast moving stitch...it covered a lot of canvas quickly! I;ve never seen it combined with x stitch though.----Jan

That will be a very pretty sampler and yes, I know just what you mean about charts going out of print. I'm fine with other stitches as long as they don't mention the queen stitch!!!! Then I shudder and give up!

What a neat sampler! I like different stitches, but sometimes the rhythm of that sweet little X is hard to beat.

That is a really great sampler! I don't think that I've seen it before, but I know that I usually miss some things going through the site. I think that it's going to be beautiful when it's finished.

OOoooo, it's a great sampler! I can see why you fell hard for it. You won't get bored doing all the different kinds of stitches, that's for sure. Very neat!
