Hi all. First, I must say while clenching my jaws, I hate winter.
But I love the information that Nancy from Victorian Motto Shoppe shared in her post.
My friend uses stamp pads for antiquing but never did I think to use a brush for control until I read Nancy's post. What a difference.
You can use very light shading and continue until you get the look you're after, but the important thing - you can get right up to the floss without it seeping as dye, stain, and coffee does. Or brush over the floss too for more of an aged look. I took her advice and am so thrilled.
Here's the latest Santa from book 53 with changes to his hat. The beard didn't have much contrast to the linen so I used my angled brush and very little ink, and added some depth around the beard. On the left side, I just touched around the beard, and on the right, continued down the rest of his body. I like the control, it's not wet, doesn't need rinsed, a little bottle of stamp cleaner cleans the brush! This color is coffee and I have the black also to use on dark unbleached fabric. Just test on the edge of the piece for depth and brush excess off on paper if necessary. A very light touch of the brush on the pad is all that's necessary.

I've been doing a little shopping - online so there are no "incidents"- but it was for all the family brats. Wal-mart has a decent price on the pricey flea control.
These two are very much like me, and could not stand to be out in the white crap.
I found some Santa cards while roaming in my mess, and will show you next time.

What a great idea! I'll have to try that one. Catherine Jordan taught our Guild how to use fabric paint on our samplers and used a Japanese brush. We were scared to death, but it was actually easy peasy. I still have her blue and green paints from the kit but it will be much more cost effective to just buy a stamp pad. Thank you for sharing. I so agree on the snow. I think I'm living in the wrong place. lol! Interesting about the brush and ink pad. I never would have thought of that. Of course, I'm also too scared to try anything like that. :D
We had snow too but I thought it was pretty - I am a cold-weather girl. Love the new technique, such a great idea!
It sleeted here... I would have liked snow, especially if it cripples the area so I don't have to work! That would be nice! I am thinking I will try that someday too! Hugs!

I have to agree..I hate winter too! It is too early for even a flake of snow..infact, no snow all winter would be fine with me. Thanks for the demo on using the ink pad. I read that on VMSS blog also. Seems much easier than stain. Have a good week.

The idea of staining looks so much easier than using coffee. I haven't tried staining but if I do I will use the stamp pad version.

Hi Marly, I wished I could have some of your snow. I grew up and played in the wonderful stuff. Moved to Sunny California at 15. Moved to VT at age 60, and hated driving in the stuff. My childhood memories are wonderful so I will keep them with the snow.

I can't wait to try this. Anything having to do with paint brushes and painting gives me thrills! Obviously I was not allowed to paint on walls as a child and am a frustrated painter. I even like painting walls! Dumb I know. And thank you for the tip on the flea control. The stray cat at our house was housed in our garage last night with a heater because it was snowing here in NC! And, she might be pregnant...
Forgot to mention-Mr. Green Santa is gorgeous! With the blending colors of his coat and the collar and holly and your shading technique he is Christmas worthy!
I hate winter and cleaning up the white stuff too, but I must say your tree is beautiful. I have to CONSTANTLY look for the beauty during the winter months just to get through the season. Technically it isn't even winter yet, but we've had snow, ice and temps in the teens with windchills in the single digits. Yuck!

I love winter, get too little of it here in Texas. I love your Santas, plan to do a set of them, one year. I do have a question, maybe you have covered it, but I haven't seen it. I know you hang some of your samplers bare (not in frames) on your walls, how do you clean them. It is so dusty here that I worry about doing that. I would like to since frames cost so much. Have a wonderful thanksgiving.
