Hello people. Decision time - next project. How the heck can you choose one sampler from the dozens that wait patiently in your stash. We love all of them, or we wouldn't be holding on to them. I'm preferring a greenish linen for the fabric so that narrowed the field. When I pulled my recent online purchased fabric I was a little disappointed.
It came folded in a little bag as always, but when I opened it, the fold lines were obvious because of the faded color. Hand dyed so I can't wet or wash it. A little hard to see in the photo but believe me, those horizontal folds are light and the vertical line is really light. On top of that, it's not 13 x 18 as I ordered, it's 16 1/2" on one end and 17" on the other. That means my 15" project that could squeak by on 18", will not work.

To prevent fold lines, I use the cardboard rolls from wraps for storing hand-dyed linens and others, but keeping them from unrolling was a problem. I was concerned that tight rubber bands would leave marks and certainly didn't want tape, so here's my solution. My Walmart brand premium stretchable wrap! Just roll it over the linen and it sticks to itself, keeps the linen clean, and I can grab the tubes during searches without worrying about lotion sticky or chocolate smudgy hands.

Darth Vader has his wand, I have mine. Mine is from the wide roll of foil and holds five colors of smaller 35 count pieces. You could use pieces of plastic pipe too. I have another with 30 and one with 32. A few pieces of the wrap hold them on and I can pull this out and check the size and color on the tag, without having to rummage through all the shorts. These were gifts and I loved the colors so much that I ordered larger pieces in two different counts. I need to make a notebook with sample scraps clearly marked for color reference. My paper rolls are wrapped with plastic wrap, sometimes muslin, to prevent contact with cardboard that isn't acid-free. I have pieces from years ago that are not protected and are still fine, but it's a concern to many stitchers.

I pulled the colors (along with my changes) for Harriot and this may be the next start. But that usually changes the last minute. This linen color is the same as the fold marked piece, but larger and from a different source. The more I look at this, I'm changing my mind. We'll see. I think I need a small.

It's in the 30's and 40's this weekend. Usually during a hot flash, the cold outside air is refreshing, but those frigid temps made me feel like a bonfire in an ice cube. Unfortunately, the brats don't care about the warmer weather, they want back in. Forget the padded outdoor condos, the heated box, room to run and play. Look at the pitiful stare I'm getting. This little one (who is afraid of the litter in the box) is hurdling the 4 foot plywood barrier without a sound and we've found her in closets, under the bed, in the basement....and she is not catchable. Right now she and Bud are playing hockey with the leather toys and if they don't nap afterwards, back outside!
Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks for visiting.

Good ideas!
I've rolled some of my samplers (waiting to be framed) on wrapping paper rolls but I put a piece of fabric between the cardboard and the stitched piece.
Here it's way too humid to use the plastic wrap.
So sorry bout your linen...I hate when I'm ready to work on something and things go askew...but a great tip on storage...hope the kitty's behave have a great weekend hugs lil raggedy Angie
Great idea...thanks :) I have several completed samplers waiting to be framed. I keep them flat in a dresser drawer in my guest room since it's not being used for anything else until company comes. I can't tell you how many pieces of fabric I have in another drawer for my cross stitch projects. They are still in their folded state in the plastic wrappers from when I bought them at the cross stitch store. I never thought about fading. I think I'll start rolling them on tubes. Thanks for the pointer.
Wonderful idea for preventing folds in fabric. I have bunches of fabric in small plastic bags from my shoppe owner days. I need to get rid of this because almost all of it has been discontinued, so I cannot use it on current designs. Need to open and check it. Hope it is OK. One day soon I am going to have a big Homespun Elegance Yard Sale on fibers and fabrics. I just wish I had more time. Sorry for the ramble. Love you blog ~ it is great!
I do the same thing Colleen does, keep finished pieces laying flat in a drawer. But, that is a good idea for storing fabric that is waiting to be used.
I use the paper tubes too for my fabrics. But never thought of the saran wrap stuff. Brilliant idea AGAIN ... Thanks.
Love you kitty picture. Kody is 11 YO and he loves all dogs ... not sure of cats, but I want one anyhow. She is sooo adorable.
Enjoy the weekend.
Peace and Blessings as always,
Barb
Sorry about the change of linen color at the fold lines, Marly. Hmmm...maybe I should go unfold the ones still in bags.
Enjoy your weekend!

What a great idea for storing linen. I have to start doing that.
I like your linen storage idea. Good idea! lol about the cats. Dear dear -- don't know how you do it!
Marly what a great idea for your linen.
Aww kittys look melts your heart. Such a pretty cat!

I think it is hard to order fabric online. But often we don't have a choice, especially when the LNS closes. The cardboard tube is a super idea--thanks. The kitty really had a sad face, but adorable! Enjoy your weekend.

Rolling your work or linen-in-waiting is such a good idea!
ooOoo! Harriot is so pretty. Pick her!
Aww the little sweetie.♥
Hey Marly, wonderful idea on storing the linen, sweet kitty looking in, Blessings Francine.
Marly, it seems to me that you are really a committed, devoted, talented, genius person when it comes to cross stitch and all that is involved with it. I enjoy reading all of your ideas, knowing, all the while, that I'll never do the stitching that you do. You really should write a book.
That is one precious kitty. It's such a shame that she/he won't let you touch or hold her/him.
I think we're going to get more snow on Monday.. I hope not.

I never thought of keeping a notebook full of linen samples, Marly--what a great idea! My linen is organized by count, but I know the folds are a problem sometimes. Some of it is rolled, but most is folded once or twice depending on the size. Of course, since I stitch mainly small pieces, I can usually work around any fold lines...
Oh, how can you resist that mournful little face? I'm sure the kitties are hoping for another wintery blast very soon so they can enjoy your nice warm house :)
Brilliant idea Marly!! I'll have to give this a go because I can't stand those lines/folds on my linens either. Can't wait for you to start your new sampler. PS, i love your header photos!! Your choice of samplers and colours are beautiful and they all go together!!
Those nasty fold lines!!!! I love your way of problem solving..... Ingenious of you to think to not only roll the fabric, but to use a wrap to secure... Perfect!!
Love your idea of using empty rolls for storing your fabric + using cling wrap to keep it in place.
Seeing those fold lines reminds me of all the folded fabrics I have. I guess I should unfold them and roll them. Another project. Great, just what I need. (Sigh.)
I store my finished samplers in a closet; they hare hanging from skirt hangers. I need to do a better job of organizing my other linens though. Will have to start saving some cardboard tubes!
Our bean and ham soup was delicious. How was yours?
I have my linens organized by count but they are mostly all folded inside the plastic bags they arrived in. I have my finished pieces hanging from skirt hangers in the closet. They are waiting for the framing bug to bite me!
Your kitty is just adorable!
What a great way to store linen. i usually end up washing out half the color to get the lines out.
I am looking forward to seeing your new start. That face!! So sweet!
I hate when I order a piece of fabric and the cut is so messed up. I wish I could call 30's and 40's frigid temps, but we haven't had a day above 30 in many weeks. Today it's -15 with windchill of -30. Can't wait to see what new project you decide to work on.
Yuck on the fade lines. Have you thought about just dunking it in a dye bath of your own? I keep my finished pieces rolled, but haven't done that yet with my blank linens, guess I need to get on that!
