Hope everyone had the Christmas they hoped for. Ours was very nice and the first Eve and Christmas we've had in a few years. I don't even want to think about last year at this time. We need to enjoy and cherish each celebration because life is always messing with us.
Sally. Oh Sally. I so wanted to finish her before year's end and I think I will. But I picked up right where I left off. Errors on top of errors. I enlarged the motif area and colored in the symbols. It helped. So why am I continuing to make errors? Many of you start several projects and then set them aside, but do the threads stay with them? I have so many older skeins, new skeins, and some are noticeably off. So if you need that color for a new start, do you get a fresh skein or take it from the stalled project? Just curious. I'm assuming the thread stays because by the time you return to it, a new skein may be needed and slightly off from what you were using. I have always finished a piece before another start, but needed to set Sally aside. She taught me a lesson - make notes and keep them with the chart when you change colors and placements! I forgot everything. I used the wrong gold when I picked her up the other day and had to remove it all and also forgot about the error in the vase which made it two stitches shy of the chart.
Now the stems are making me nuts. Look at the errors, and these are after removing the stems once already. Top right is one extra stitch out, middle is missing one stitch which made the circled area off one row, far left is an extra linen thread so the row is over 3. Ordinarily I leave errors but this is exactly the same on each side of the house and the stems are symmetrical from center. I have been removing more stitches than adding.
Rain rain rain rain and then it rained. The only snowflakes I've seen are on Carole's sweater that needed pearls reattached. I can't believe she was going to get rid of it because a few pearls were off. I always remove embellishments before recycling an item so I had lots of extras to add. I may be seeing the real ones by week's end. Not happy about that.

I doubt anyone but you would see the errors. No one ever looks that close. Unless of course you are entering it into a show. Then some judge MIGHT see them. We are are own worse critic.

I've run into the issue with thread colors, and I don't know if the pattern is referring to an older version of a thread color or if the newer thread that I have is just off... It's a bit confusing, I hadn't even thought of the possibility of needing to keep thread with projects when setting them aside; in the past when I've set a project aside I didn't pick another one up, so the thread wasn't used elsewhere. I'm thinking about doing that now, though, so I'm glad I read your post. I think if I will keep thread with each project until the project is done.
Good point. I often put a project aside when I need a break from it but never thought about keeping it all kitted up. I will definitely do it now, I had not thought about the risk of loosing track of the threads used. Thanks for the tip!

We are getting sleet and snow today.
Sally has become a real challenge, you must finish or we will be forever referring to her. Like the ' One that got away". I have only one unfinished project Lucy Redd, I don't know why but I chose 18 count ( I hadn't stitched in over twenty years and forgot ) and she is so big I have lost interest. I will finish her! I have her all kitted up so will not have to search for floss. Everyone is correct, mistakes are only know to you, and make the piece unique! Well that is what I say to myself after each finish. Stitchers right? there is always something unique! Happy new Year.
No one would have known there were mistakes, since the pieces you stitch are primitive samplers/samplings, and early settlers weren't perfect! I also strip away embellishments before getting rid of clothing. Lately, I have been saving the buttons, then taking hunks of the shirt fabric (from my son's shirts), and then I am cutting up jeans for the seams (coasters/trivets) and fabric for backings, etc... Not much gets to the thrift store! Hugs!
You are a perfectionist ... for me "that's good enough". I am trying to work on some of my patterns purchased over the past few years. Am also looking at all the new designs... they just keep coming and that drives me crazy...Not enough time in this lifetime... maybe the next ????

Ha Ha!! Your OCD is getting the best of you Girlfriend...But I am one to talk. ;-) I know I'd be ripping threads out and throwing a royal hissy fit to boot....that is, if I could even SEE my mistakes (man...these eyes are getting old.) BUT...one piece of wisdom that someone passed on to me....Remember...the girls/women who did these beautiful treasures we try so hard to mimic - whether stitcheries or hooked rugs or whatever....most often did them in the evenings after the day's work was done....by fire and candlelight... You do not think mistakes were made? As for the thread coloration issues...I guess I LIKE variation...it adds interest to the piece and makes it somehow more authentic... A bit faded from the sun here, perhaps? A little more intense dye in these? All would be expected in a genuinely old piece.... But, that being said, I do feel your pain. I had left a basket of wool for my hooking that I never thought would go an entire year untouched... When I came back to it a few months ago, I have no idea what wool goes with what project. EEEK! Marly, I had to look and look and look at your picture to see any errors. it wasnt until i read your notes that i could 'see' anything that was off. dont be so hard on yourself! and i like what CrankyCrow says above: think like the sisters who were trying to do this by firelight. an 'off' stitch here and there is nothing; and really just adds to the beauty and authenticity look of a piece.
It seems as though, every time I put down a project, someone has changed something on me! I had to stop worry about being off so I could continue to stitch. Happy New Year Marly!
I always get another skein from my stash if I need the same color for more than one project. I try remember to write notes on my working copy of the pattern and keep that with the project. Since I'm always running to appointments with my mom, I like to keep everything in it's own project bag so I can grab and go.
