For years, our only local craft store provided supplies for our valley, with choices for just about any and all crafts and art. They expanded several years ago into an adjoining space and added framing, fabrics, bridal, home decorating and furniture, while increasing their paint and artist department. Their prices were always low, no coupons needed, comparable to Michael's and Hobby Lobby when a coupon is used. Everyone is very upset to see these headlines. We have a small Jo-Ann's, not the super store, and it is very limited. Glues, beads, craft paint, standard yarns, and sewing supplies.
I knew something would happen when Michael's purchased the Catan stores a few years ago. They are closing all 36 stores and reopening a maximum of 12 as Michael's. Damn. Could go two ways. Either corporate will realize we are lacking such a store (or anything close) in this area and it will be beneficial to them, or they will see that all the other local stores are closed and there is not much to draw people in. They did a really good business here, and I hope the decision is made to continue in this location but with a Michael's about 40 minutes away and only keeping 12 Catan stores, I don't see much hope. We'll know late summer.
My husband went for his six month dental cleaning and a front tooth veneer broke into two pieces and came off. He ended up with close to a $1000 charge which was not what he expected. Me either! Isn't it terrible what it costs to maintain your mouth? I mentioned a while back about Costco members having the option to join a dental plan for very little cost, but there are very few dentists locally that accept the plan, or any other individual plan. My cousin joined and got 5 back teeth pulled, a partial bridge, plus follow up, xray and initial exam for $150 total. TOTAL. I paid $675 for Carole's partial with no other work and it was lower end!! Her tooth that recently broke off at the gum line was filled two months prior for $185, and it will cost $325 for the extraction.
Around every corner ….. there he is ….. staring at me.

I had my teeth pulled years back because they where all soft and cavities in most. I am glad I have two plates upper and lower and they have lasted me for years. I have a good dentist who makes my plates and it dose not cost as much as your husband last dental bill. Wow. Your cat is a little weird. Why dose he keep staring at you. big hugs
What a shame about your local craft store. I have always had good dental insurance which I am extremely grateful for. It still costs a lot, but I won't have a $1000 surprise.
Get that cat a hobby Marly! He sure is a handsome fella. I feel the same way about PatCatans. I was introduced to them when we moved to Ohio. Oh the selection and the prices!! I'm not a Michaels fan so I'm pretty sad
Oh, no!!! I hadn't heard this about Pat Catan's, Marly. I'm so sad as that was also my go-to craft store. Five minutes away, right next to Sam's Club and the Dollar Tree. I just got a gift card for them for my birthday--guess I need to use it soon. Even if it does reopen as a Michaels, it won't be the same. I am going to go pout for a while :(
Bummer news, both on the craft front and the medical front. My hubby fell off a ladder last year , face first onto rock. He cracked his front tooth and had it extracted, but luckily for us our daughter works for the dentist (as his assistant) and he wrote off the charges to the tune of $800. We weren`t as lucky when it came to dental implants, costs over $3500. With those costs how can a lady save for necessary craft supplies? We live in a rural area and the only craft place in town is a Michaels Crafts, it`s OK but their stock is limited and they don`t carry fabric. It`s a 3 hour drive to the closest Joann`s store. I enjoy visiting my sister in South Jersey because I make a beeline for all the specialty cross stitch and fabric stores!
I don't like this culture of big chain stores buying up or shoving out local businesses either. In my town of 22,000 Walmart moved in 20 years ago. One by one all the little local business's closed up. The main street is full of "antique" stores (mostly flea market junk) where real businesses once were. Some of the empty buildings housed restaurants that didn't last, or pizza places. All the local charm and individuality has gone. Also gone is the quality we could once buy, shoe shops that sold quality shoes, not the crap Walmart has. You get the idea. I sympathize with the lost of this craft store.
Marly: The voo doo cat what a hoot I love the eyes, when I hold Blondie in my arms she stares at me for at least ten minutes.
I hate the dentist, it is so costly to go to a dentist and the premiums for the insurance is nuts.
I hope they keep the store the town needs to get on the band wagon and help to keep them in town, many city boards can offer incentive to stay, that would help other stores to open and stay.
I have not been in a Walmart in over 25 years I refuse to shop them due to the fact all the mom and pop shops end up closing they cannot compete.

My daughter told me, this morning, that she broke a back tooth last night. She needs crowns on some teeth and now this.
Sorry about the store that you like closing. We have an A.C. Moore and a Michaels. Hobby Lobby is not too far away.
Budman is a beautiful kitty. Sure would like to know what he wants.
Have a cozy weekend.

Charlotte in Va.
Our Michaels is terrible.I never go in there because they never have what I want. Online only.
Hi there! We have a good variety of craft stores around here so far! But I resent the big chains moving in and taking out the small shops, no matter where! Grrr... Off to continue on my quest to get caught up on everyone! Yeah right... Hugs!
Bummer about PC’s...A friend in Ohio was so excited a few years ago when they got one, and she was very sad a few weeks ago when she learned they were closing. We don’t have them here.... The nearest big town to Nod has a JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, Michaels (all within 1/4 mile of each other) and a specially cross stitch shop across town... I worry about the latter because the owner isn’t exactly “young” any more, and I don’t see that it is profitable enough for anyone else to be interested in continuing it when she retires. Don’t get me started on dental crap...I have had a private policy for years and years....which pays for basically nothing....I think I would be better off just saving the premiums and putting them toward my costs...and I may just do that now that you bring it up.... Silly, silly, kitteh....Maybe he was your star struck lover in another life.... ;-). Happy Saturday (ok, Sunday to you).... Robin
So sad about the store. Our mall just keeps getting emptier all the time.
