Up or down

Got my hoop!  It's a big'un.   I can keep the linen loose enough to still use the sewing method!  This will make it so much easier for me, and the spool huggers are still on because of the linen size.

With the hoop over my lap looking down on it, the usual horizontal position....
Changing the linen position and swinging it around to lift to eye level (TV showing through from the wall) ….

Not sure which will be best for a hoop newbie, but I think the vertical position won't create neck strain so I'll try that first.

Should I use a water based sealer on the inside of the hoop where it holds the linen?  The wood is very smooth and I don't know if there is a finish.  Are they usually sealed?

When I push the hoop down …..
 Budman.

Have a great weekend.

I have no advice on wether the hoop has a finish or needs a coat of varnish. The old ones I have do not have a finish. I'm going to guess that fabric damage from wood acids are not a great danger because we're not supposed to be leaving the hoop in one spot for long? I do know some people will wrap it with strips torn from old sheets to improve the grip and prevent the fabric from changing tension.

As far as hoop position, I usually end up moving it around depending on light conditions, where my eyes are focusing best that day, and what's on TV. I also don't use a stand, but a loop of string from hoop and around my neck if I need the hoop supported.

Hi Marly: I remember once hearing that hoops do not have a finish on them because the wood needs to breath and the varnish has a chance of flaking off after some time.
I am wondering what design you are doing, is it a Black Bird Design? just curious.
Have a beautiful weekend dear friend.

People wrap the inner hoop with twill tape. That helps to keep the crushing down on your fabric. I've read once of using swimsuit elastic to do the job. Less bulk and it wraps more evenly. Maria s

Hi Marley, you bind the inner hoop. If you google wrapping embroidery hoop you will find lots of tutorials on how to do it. Enjoy and good luck,

I wrap my inner hoops with bias tape. Several internet videos available to show you how. Very easy. Here's a good one: www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-bind-an-embroidery-hoop-4106533.

I think holding it vertically would help with neck strain. Many stitchers use bias tape and wrap the inner ring. Enjoy your weekend!

I know you have mentioned this before but I cannot find it now. What brand hoop is this? I am very interested.

Dont seal your new hoop, wrap it with cotton seam binding.
