Drum roll please

My linen order arrived with the Sewing Club book from BBD.

And one that I believe will also make a great drum.

I need to make a few more masks, trying a different pattern because I'm not comfortable.  I had no idea JoAnn's was considered essential and is open, but of course no elastic.  I prefer the cording type and found it online, not listed as elastic.  It's called shock cord, available through specialty shops for paracord and camping equipment.  Ripstop by the Roll has it in 1/8, 3/32, and 1/16 and from doing a little research, it is elasticized.  Several places had stock but one site had a boatload of colors, all sold.  If you need it, do a search for shock cord.

My great nephew's very young kids are having a very difficult time with the online studies because they aren't seeing their teacher and it's just not registering with them.  I thought as with Facebook and other platforms, they were holding classes online but they aren't.  Our districts only require teachers to "check in" with a parent or student once a week.  All studies are directed to learning sites.  Requirements of offering instruction in order to count as a work day was waived, full salaries continue, and no days past the traditional year's end will happen.  Parents were hoping June would be offered for classes.

Snowed quite a bit yesterday, but Mark drove me to the pet store for a pantry stocking.  And then he made a few more birdhouses from left over cedar.  The bluebird houses have been up for weeks, but not one has taken residence.

The flip up fronts make cleaning them so much easier.  I've had my dad's for many years and they needed tools for cleaning.  Most of them are deteriorating and I hate to see them go.  His houses were white with red roofs but Mark prefers to keep the cedar bare.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if on a golf day, a can of red spray paint appears.

We had our first death here and believe another happened yesterday.

Stay safe.
Be well.

Those drum rolls are wonderful. Even if I would stitch one, I know that I would never "finish" it. It's the journey, not the destination for me...lol!

I love drum rolls... The vwey first one I did was a BBD design.... I modified the finishing part a wee bit to suit me, but their directions are really good I think. I have my eye on several in that book...I really like the one called "A Bit of Summer" with the house, but not sure I could handle the "sanguine" linen. I'll wait until you do it and see how you change up the colors LOL. The one I flagged to do first, though, is "Songbird Whistles"....so sweet. BUT...there are a couple of projects on my dance card in front of those....and a very unbecoming mermaid to put an end to. Want for me to send you some red paint???

I wish our JoAnn or Hobby Lobby were essential and would open up!! I am sorry you had your first death there. We have had 11 deaths in our county. Not good at all. And Milwaukee County is the next over. Guess how many they have?! 120 deaths. No thanks. And that is where my whole family resides. :( Thanks for the suggestion on the shock cord.

Happy you could get some food for the kitties!! I know they must appreciate a pantry full!!
Sweet birdhouses and I laughed when you mentioned a can of red spray paint!!!! Red just makes things better!!!
Thanks for the info on the shock cord!! Who would have ever thought you could not find elastic anywhere!!!!
We keep close to home and are both safe, well, and very thankful!!!
Take care and wishing the same for you and your family!

Those drums look wonderful. I have a neighbor who teaches middle school math. She said she spends hours planning and only 6 or 7 kids check in to do the lessons. School is going to be such a mess next Fall. Our governor has already cancelled classes for the rest of this year. I taught for thirty years and am so glad to be retired!

The drums look really beautiful but probably beyond my skill level. I didn’t know JoAnn’s was open. I just figured it was curb pick up and only certain locations? Maybe I’m thinking of Michaels or maybe I’m just getting it all wrong, like always. My niece-in-law is a PA teacher and I overheard her saying it is three times her regular work load to do this at home stuff. She is not a lazy bones and loves teaching so I’m thinking it is one more totally screwed up thing now. Thank you again and again for blogging. You and Coni and Robin are my “essentials”. You all are Keeping my head from exploding.

Have you considered making ties for your masks instead of using elastic? My daughter couldn’t handle the elastic so I did the ties which she likes much better. Just a thought.

Love the birdhouses Mark has made for you.Well a red roof on these should do the job I think.
The drumroll is beautiful and I don't know this book from BBD. There books are always beautiful.
Stay save and healthy!

Our JoAnn's closed several years ago........makes me so sad........I thought I kept that store in business.
Your kitty food stash looks like ours, except outs is only one flavor.
Enjoy your new linen and stitching.
A friend of mine, who has been fighting cancer since 2012, was admitted to a hospital yesterday. She has lost the sight in one of her eyes after have her chemo treatment.
Her husband couldn't go in with her so she's all by herself. Makes me worry and feel so badly for her. I hope she won't get that virus and will be able to come home very soon.
Have had deaths in our county. Very scary !
Take care, stay well.

Not all teachers are checking in with students, and still collecting a paycheck! I have two children that are teachers, one in western PA and one in the Reading School district. You have no idea the work they have been putting in to teach these kids online. As much as 9 hours a day to collect that paycheck. They are under as much stress as the students. There are State and District guidelines to follow, tons of paperwork to be submitted, and their performance monitored.

I love the drumroll and the bird houses. My particular area has had a few deaths and less than 100 cases, but the Chicago and suburbs are not that far away from here. Many people commute to Chicago daily for work although I believe 2 hours one way is too far to commute. My daughter teaches high school math and college math. She was to return to work after her maternity leave, but the shelter-in-place order changed all that. This week, our governor closed schools for the rest of the school year, which for my daughter is 4 more weeks. All schools in IL are now mandated to do e-learning, also called remote learning. My daughter is working more now than when she was in the classroom. She is so frustrated! The students fail to log in which then requires the teacher to contact the student and parent(s) for face to face online video conferencing. Incomplete assignments and cheating are rampant and then the teacher is required to offer extra credit assignments to those students and they never get reprimanded. I think e-learning is hardest on the young, grade school kids as they really need the classroom experience. Stay safe and healthy.

I like your birdhouses. Tip-open fronts would make cleaning so much easier than taking off the top or side! I wonder if any bluebirds would stick around if we put some up.

Iowa schools are off the rest of the year also. Home school works for *older* self motivated students, not for young ones or those with no clue, like my own DS was (is? he still hates school) :-/ It was not easy to get him to stay in and graduate HS, even from alternative one. I also found I could not teach him when he got in the weeds with division in the 2nd(?) grade, had to take him to Sylvan - costly but so worth his learning and both of our sanity. Still peeves me that they throw so many methods for division that fast, no wonder he was confused - I certainly was at some of those "methods". Oooops - I'm dangerously close to ranting again. In short - I'm very glad that I have no school age kids and am not a teacher right now. Next year ought to be... "interesting".

Those drum rolls are lovely!

Those will be beautiful drums, Marly--looks like a great book! I've never attempted a drum--not sure I could do it without looking wonky :) Love Mark's birdhouses, too--they would be pretty painted but more upkeep in future years. I find myself thinking ahead more and more and choosing the easier way out!

Schooling is so tough these days. My youngest sister teaches high school English in inner city Boston--tough in real life, even tougher in the days of online teaching. It's so sad because this is her final year--she is due to retire. What a way to go out--it's made her very sad and she's even considering staying on another year. I hope she doesn't -- it's been a tough career, but very rewarding in the end.

Out Joann's are closed down here, but I did manage to do a pick-up last week. Very easy and safe :)
