In a mottlin' mood

Crabby mottlin' mood.

So I dabbed two shades of dye on the project with a crumpled rag.
The house color is as charted, it looks better than I expected.
I'm not choosing the final threads for the large bird until later.
Later could be anywhere from a half hour to two days.
And I dislike this stiff fabric that feels as if it was spray painted.
Soft wimpy linen is worse and I have happy mediums, but this small piece was the perfect size for the project.

I like the mottled look of that fabric. I am sorry you don't like the resulting texture. I prefer stiffer fabric myself.

I like the color. When the LNS shut down last December, I found myself leaving some lovely linens behind because they were stiff as a board and scratchy. Now I wonder - would the linen soften up if washed before using? Would the dyes wash out?

Is there a reason linens vary so much in texture? Is it the quality of the fiber? Are some better for items that might get more wear (boxes? needle books? garments?) vs those that will not (framed items)? Personal preference of those who design the fabrics?

I just want to add that I do know some linens aren't 100% linen. The ones with other fibers, usually rayon??) seem to be softer. And that linen garment fabrics will wrinkle badly until it's been worn and aged out of that.

Since I use a hoop the softness or lack of never bothers me. I do say that stiff fabric can be annoying not in the hoop but the overflow part never seems to falls right! Love your fabric mottling ,makes for an interesting sampler. Stitch on!

Well aren't you the little speed stitchin' demon! You're gong to have to make a decision on the bird colors sooner than later the rate you're going. Colors are great and I do like your mottling. I'm too chicken to do that. I stitch in a hoop too so the texture hasn't been an issue for me that I remember. If it ever was, I've long since forgotten it. See? Memory issues aren't all bad. ;-) ~Robin~
