I am in shock. It's been several hours and I'm still in shock! I visited my dentist to take care of the broken tooth and all he needed to do was a little drilling and fill it. No problem. A molar toward the back was sensitive so he asked if I would like a sealer brushed on, I agreed. I was done from start to finish (including talking about his dog and mom) in 24 minutes. I went to the front desk, and my bill was a whopping $654. WHAT? He's young and starting out, prices were reasonable. Now that he's established patients over this last year, I cannot believe what he is charging. Is this out of line? This dental practice he's purchased has been the only I've used since my teens. The breakdown - filling was $308, sealer was $274, walking in the door (limited visit charge) was $72. Are you kidding me? And you don't leave the office without full payment! I am really in shock for less than 30 minutes and one small filling. I just purchased Carole a Lenovo 10" FHD tablet to replace the small, old, and useless one offered through her phone plan (it's a flip phone). She needs it to order grocery pickup and has no internet service. If I had not done that this morning, I may not have after the dentist trip! Geez. So tell me, since I've never gone elsewhere, are these routine prices?
And I found out why the PA unclaimed office made the confusing request. They are all working from home and have no files at hand. So all the attorney's paperwork is at a closed office. It may be another year before they get to it.

To me, all dentist and eye dr charges are unreasonable (that coming from a very high-priced securities law attorney LOL)....but I routinely have the sealant for sensitivity put on...and uhmmm, nope, never has it been even been REMOTELY that high. Yikes! In fact, the gal who cleans my teeth puts it on when she's cleaning if I have a "hot" spot....and it's never even an extra charge.... You must be getting some fancy stuff LOL. ~Robin~
Screwed and not even kissed.
So sorry!
Sounds totally unreasonable. They should have told you what the charge would be before they did any one thing -- my dentist does. Do you have any dental insurance that might help with coverage?
Ne yazık ki kendi kafalarına göre ücret uygulaması yapıyorlar. Çok para bu.
At least he didn't suggest that you have a crown put on the broken tooth. That would have been in the thousands here. Root canals are 800.00. Hadn't heard about the sensitivity thing. Cleanings are another thing.
Had to have two implants done years ago costing me over 6,000.00.
I guess we're paying for their college tuition ?
The part that hurts, too, is the short time it took to fix your tooth problem.
Need to have my eyes checked but can't afford it right now.
Take care, stay well, looking forward to Fall.

You wrote a post a few years ago about using Costco for dental insurance. Are you not using it now? Please respond as we are retiring soon and planning to check into Costco for a dental plan.
Dental work prices have gone bananas... my pinhole filling that I got last week was $179... I see a lot of price increases being "blamed" on Covid shutdown (and special safety measures that were put into place to reopen).
I continue to cut my own hair....because I don't even want to know how much they will charge these days...my cut used to be $60...
Wow, what a shocker. And I agree, they should have let you know cost, especially of the sealer - that sounds very high. I had a sensitive tooth once and they gave me a prescription for a high-floride toothpaste that was under $10 at the time. That was about 15+ years ago though, so that may be horrendously expensive now too, and I don't know if the sealers were available then, I don't recall it being offered though.
How frustrating on dealing with the unclaimed office. You'd think they could put in a little blurb in the letter about "because we are currently working from home, we can't access paper files". I suppose it's the same form letter used for the past who knows how many years written to cover everything from paper cuts to alien invasion...
Marly dear - Present him with a bill for "relief-listening therapy" about
his dog and Mother. $500.00 sounds about right. You are not paying for his
actual services, but the cost of his practice which I don't see lasting
very long at that rate.... JustGail is spot on about the unclaimed office.
Hope the week goes better for all.
