That is my question. In this gorgeous reproduction, the top birds are not equally spaced yet the remainder of the sampler is. Do you reproduce as the original, or do you alter a design to achieve symmetry? Just curious.
Question #2. If you lost all your work in a disaster, are there any samplers that you would stitch again? How many of your favorites could you not be without and have no choice but to do so? Or would you carry on with new charts?
Guess who got into my pants? Guess who was stung twice in the same leg by a massive hornet? Guess whose immune system was triggered by the venom? Guess who has dried shrunken and split lips? Guess who killed his ass?

I would not restitch. I would do new . Sorry about your sting.
Glad you killed that rascal! So sorry you got stung!!! Hmmm. I have one I might restitch. But I have so many new ones I’m just itching to start. What a quandary that would be! As far as your first question I would chart it exactly as it was stitched. It adds to the charm.
I'd have to make those birds line up even or it would drive me nuts when I looked at it!! I lost all my stitching in a fire in 2006. I've never restitched one...just kept moving on.
Sorry about your sting. I hope you keep an Epi-Pen close at hand!
If you haven’t stitched it yet I believe you could do an adjustment in the middle flowers. Or,if possible frog the flowers and redo them. I think might do. Good luck.
I have never believed that when you do a piece of needlework it must match the pattern. I move around, change colors, correct mistakes, leave something out, add something. This all doesn't happen in just one piece but over the years I have done all that on different designs. I want it to please me so I do what makes me happy. Go to it Marly - it would really bother me to see something off - my eyes would always go to that part and not see the whole beautiful piece.
Take care and get better- I don't like bugs!!!
I think I would stitch this sampler as it is,because there would be so much to chance and that would keep me off.
So sorry for the sting twice!!auch.....
When lost my stuff I don't think I will re-stitch them, because I cann't stitch so much anymore and there are so much more beautiful designs I like to stitch.
Take care Marly!

I love the quirky imperfection of the bird placement and I look for fun things like that in old stuff but if you recognize yourself as a perfectionist it will probably always bother you.
The last paragraph looks like it was written by someone else— I like the candor. Heaps of wellness to you
OUCH ! Terrible to get stung one, much less twice ! So sorry.
The new chart looks so pretty. Don't know what to say about the birds......you are the expert there.
Have done some of my PS Santas more than once. Have given for gifts, but they are more simple to do than a whole sampler.
Take care...hope the sting is better now. Take care of your lips.

Sorry about the stings and after effects. Stinkin' wasps and hornets seem to get even more nasty tempered this time of year.
That's a gorgeous chart, what is it? I don't think I'd move one side to match the other. I'm having trouble seeing where the differences start on each side. On the other hand, it *is* pretty noticeable that they are placed differently.
As to restitching if all were lost, for me the question would be if there are charts I'd repurchase, as my stitching output is pathetic. I'm going to say no, my tastes seem to change between time I buy charts and then pull it out to even think of stitching one.
Marly: I hope you let that sucker suffer before killing it. Burt's Bee's is a great lip balm.
I could not live without two designers patterns Blackbird Designs and Betsy Morgan's designs, I would stitch them all over again.
I would alter the bird to be the same distance, but hey that's just me.

I would stitch as charted. Whoever reproduced the sampler, hopefully they charted exactly as the original. But, I always wonder if they made a mistake or not. I'm a stickler for stitching my samplers exactly as charted.
I've been reading your blog for quite some time now and this is my 1st comment.

NO! I would not try to change the placement of the birds. It looks as tho the right bird is tipping his head down into the flower and I like that. The top oval of flowers itself is not symmetrical. The center section has a large semicircle of flowers on the left and a small butterfly on the right. The composition is balanced but not symmetrical in the center and that gives the impression of movement. It is a beautiful sampler.
Hope you feel better soon.
Its not really the birds that are the problem, I think it's the floral piece between those birds that causes the eye to see unbalance. I would have to change that small floral part somehow if I were to stitch this sampler. Otherwise it's a pretty sampler.
Sorry about those stings -- pretty sneaky of that bug. Guess it got frustrated it couldn't find a way out of your pants!
OUCH, I think I would stitch again if lost( sad) Parrot ,leopard. lion by Scarlet Letter. I tell my children they can have any sampler they like except that one! They will have to wait until after the funeral. hahaha I never mess with reproductions, I enjoy the little mistakes the girls( sometimes boys) made.
I would leave as is as I’ve already told myself that the person who did this said one of these birds needs to be trying to eat an unseen bug on a leave. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Oh, so sorry about the hornet stings, Marly--and not one, but, two! I haven't been stung in a long time, but I do remember how much it hurts.
I am not a sampler stitcher, but I am so symmetrical that it would probably bother me if I didn't change it up :) Yet again, I know true reproductions are meant to be stitched as close to the original as possible. I'm afraid my eye would always focus on the unequal distance.
No...I don't think I would stitch anything over again. But, my big box of Christmas ornaments would definitely be one of the first things I'd grab as I ran out the door in a fire :)
I would leave birds as is and center the floral motif.
Duplicating a finished sampler done with younger eyes no longer an option.
My selections were "ambitious" in former days. So sorry about those stings
and here is hoping they will quiet down soon. Enjoy the balance of the holiday.
Sorry about the hornet sting! They are the worst. I wouldn't move the birds, but might move that floral medallion a stitch or two.
There are a number of smalls that I have been gifted that I would grab along with one or two framed pieces. I would probably re-stitch some of the smalls.
I never, never reproduce a mistake. I’m the one stitching the piece and/ if something bothers me , I correct it or change it. I’m the one who will live with the finished piece. I don’t stitched exact reproduce I give them my personal touch and became them mine. But I always give credit to the original stitcher as my source of inspiration, that’s why I always put my initials and year of completion in my pieces, plus the original stitcher name and year.
Do what makes you happy! If it bothers you before stitching, don't stitch because it will always make you crazy.
I like symmetry, and I remember that in the past that you've said the same thing. So I'd go with making it pleasing to my eye, because it would drive me crazy otherwise.
If I were stitching it, I would probably move the center floral motif to the left a few stitches to balance things out. But, if I were charting is for a pattern, I would leave it as is. That way the stitcher could make the decision for her/him self.
So sorry about your stings. Damned hornets!!!!!
Well....now this first question truly has me nonplussed. Generally I embrace quirkiness and oddities, but this one messes with my sense of balance just a wee bit too much, and I do believe I would be adjusting. There, I said it. And heck no...I wouldn't restitch a dang thing....I'm lucky enough to have gotten them done once....and my taste is fickle. Dang hornets....they are like incredibly bad and plentiful this year. I have friendly hornets I have co-existed with for years....but this year hives of nasty stinging things are popping up all over. I was stung over a dozen times on my hands (through gardening gloves)...and about a week and a half later, stung more than a dozen times on my feet and ankles....and these bites are weirdly symptomatic for days!!! And...hey...I can match and raise you your split lips....I had an very too personal encounter with a tree this weekend. Seriously think I broke my nose again. And now am known to the lake neighbors as "Tyson." ~Robin~
