Fuming

Another post, another Ativan.  First of all, Amanda, thank you for that info.  I am passing it along to the officer that told us we cannot shoot.  And here's the real flame singeing my ass.  Another officer and his family at the other end of the road are friends and neighbors of the dogs' owners and have played with them from puppydom to now, as year olds.  The father was walking their Labrador on a leash along with his wife, their 3 year old, and 5 year old daughter. The dogs attacked the Labrador, each on one end. They could not get the dogs to stop even after being kicked and hit.  The officer left the dog and got his traumatized kids into the house, then went back out.  The dogs released and their Lab was treated and survived.  The little girl is terrified to go outside, even if she sees the dogs behind the fence (which they dig beneath to escape).  Their cat was also found mauled to death under the playset.  This happened a month ago and their mom sat here shaking as she relayed her story to us, the children can't forget their dog's screams or what they witnessed. No law or common sense to notify neighbors with pets or small children. Dog warden said it was only one time, no bites to humans, and the dogs eventually released.  Mr. Warden, when we meet in person, it will only be one time that I vise your balls and I promise to eventually release.

I've been reading your posts and my heart just breaks for you. Losing a pet is hard enough, but to lose one in much a violent way has to be exceptionally traumatic. My condolences on the loss of your beloved Nitzy.

I just will never understand why some people want to train their dogs to be so vicious. The dog owner should be charged. But of course he won't. Again, so sorry this happened.

Reading all the comments just now and wondering what would have happened if it had been a small child playing in your garden, doesn't bear thinking about. Please persist in getting these dangerous dogs out of your neighbourhood.

If Amanda knows about the dog laws, why doesn't the policeman. I hope you can do something with the knowledge that you have now.
I'm broken hearted about your loss of Nitzy and what he suffered in his own yard.
I pray that the dogs can be removed from your neighborhood.........what will it take, a child or adult being mauled before something is done.
Praying that sweet Missy AND you and Mark will be safe.
Take care of your health. So sorry you have that horrific picture in your head to get over.
God Bless you !
Hugs,
Charlotte in Va.

Perhaps you can go to the Police with these people whose labrador was also attacked by these dogs. May be that will help and show them what Amanda has found about shooting when they are on your ground.
When this would happen to me, I for sure would kill these dogs no matter the consequenties.
Take care and your heart will be better after you are calmed down and take it all in.
Bigbig hug and lots of love to you and Mark, Truus from Holland

I can't blame those dogs. They were bred to have high guarding instincts and apparently they've decided their territory is now beyond their own yard. The owners however - all the blame for either not being up to the task. The owner being an ex-law enforcement who got arrested and fired for misconduct, I suspect he's a bully who thinks he's above the law, or he loves the idea of neighbors being afraid of him and his dogs. Sadly it's the neighborhood (people and animals) and those dogs that will pay.

For now it's your neighbor's dog that got injured and your poor Nitzy and their cat that got killed. Who knows how many other stray cats and wildlife have been killed? How long before they go after a little kid, or an elderly person that can't defend themselves? Given the size of those dogs, I don't know that anyone could fight them off once an attack started. And those dogs WILL attack again.

I suggest you and your neighbor make official complaints and send it to the city's insurers and lawyer, and your lawyer also. A visit to the city council meeting and let them know, at least it's on yet another record that there's a serious problem. A letter to the editor of the newspaper maybe, the jerk can't sue as it's your opinion the dogs are dangerous. I wouldn't rely on the dog warden knowing the laws, since he apparently had no idea it is legal to shoot dogs while attacking people, pets, or livestock. And take photos if/when you see those dogs out again. As gruesome as it may be, take photos of any victims too.

The city and police might take it more seriously if the town can't claim ignorance should anything else happen. The paper trail would make it impossible to sweep it all under the rug saying they were never told.

Re-reading my own comment after some coffee, I sound angry. Well I am, but not at you Marly. I'm angry at the jerk dog owner who's helping trash yet another dog breed.

Marly: It saddens me to hear this I have a neighbor next door in law enforcement and his wife is a paramedic, their dog is the only one without a leash, until I chewed ass on her for not keeping dog on leash, plus it is a therapy dog for Allina Emergency services which I worked for them 23 years, except for the rest of us the leash law does not pertain to them according to their beliefs, next time I kill the dog or take all of Allina to court, I think the big money is in Allina.
I hate that the dogs can run free and sad that the children are traumatized, I hope you can get some closer on this dog problem.
I would contact the mayor of your area, let him/her know the police officer did nothing, having a husband who worked 37 years in law enforcement he said that the mayor should know about the dog warden's actions/no actions on the loose dogs.
Please keep us updated.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am just catching up on ready what happened and I am horrified. There is a family just down the street from me that had a Cane Corso and it's as big as a horse! That dog scares me. I have a friend who had trained dogs all her life and she said Canes are more dangerous than pit bulls. In Louisiana, where she lives, a woman going to her apartment was attacked and killed by her neighbor's two Canes. I wish you the best in getting the authorities to understand what those dogs did and next time it could be a little kid since those dogs have already got a taste for killing. I wouldn't leave the house without a ball bat in my hands!

This just gets worse and worse. I'd be inclined to invest in a large ad in your local newspaper warning people in your neighborhood of the dogs and their track record. Nah...never mind...the owner who I'd be trying to piss off likely can't read. Sorry....this is bringing out the worst in me. ~Robin~ (And PS....I correct my comment from yesterday....the dog that held us hostage was a pitbull, not a Rottie.... I always confuse those two for some reason in my head and have to look at photos and then it all comes flooding back. Thanks Patty A for tickling my memory....)

I have been without access to posts for several days and am just now reading about the horror you have experienced. There are no words for the sadness I feel for your poor little Nit. I am disgusted as well. Losing a pet under any circumstance is so difficult but this situation is beyond that. I agree that there has to be a way to protest and demand some sort of satisfaction from the dog's owners. Known to be aggressive, these dogs cannot be left to their own devices. Their prey instinct is too strong. Again, I am so, so sorry this happened to you. My heart breaks.

When my Ellie was attacked, the dog owner could not be charged with anything because it was not deemed vicious, meaning it had not attacked before. But that wasn't true because it had attacked his own daughter's pug. Then the asshole would not take responsibility and I had to hire an attorney and sue to get $5k worth of medical bills paid.
So sorry you had to witness the attack. Heartbreaking.

Definitely make a complaint against these dogs, you might save the life of a crawling baby or toddler that those vicious dogs might view as a dog or animal to attack. So sorry for your loss.
