They could not believe how bad our door was. Bottom was split a foot high across the entire bottom and flipped up like Mary Tyler Moore's hairstyle in the 60's.
We have iron strap hinges on painted shed doors and they eventually caused streaking on the paint from the elements and rain. But I also did not want to attach the straps with screws into metal which creates a good chance for rust. So we opted for the MUCH less expensive and not too bad looking magnetic vinyl ones from Cre8tive (menard's and lowe's). Easy to remove if I change my mind which could be weekly, no damage to the door's surface. I chose plain straps, no spade or spear end since we have colonial bean on the others.
Even though my paint sample on a 3' x 5' plywood scrap was a perfect match, it's a little different on the steel. Still good, not a problem at all, but I can't understand why. Two coats over primer and that top coat should be the same as on wood.
The ramp at Carole's house will be built soon, her power chair is ordered, and we all have doubts about this move back home. She became friends with a woman who has lived her adult life alone (except for fur-pal Barney) in a power chair. She spent two months there in rehab after surgery and is now back home. Very independent and always was, had a terrible childhood with numerous foster homes. But Carole doesn't realize or admit how much she expects and relies on others and has for years. The staff is so wonderful, the facility and grounds are beautiful, the rooms are private, outdoor areas at every turn, large spas for showers .... she admits it will be hard to leave. But home is home!
I have been so exhausted, I fell asleep on my swing and almost toppled over like Arte Johnson after a Ruth Buzzi hit.

Good job done to have the door up. I suggest pulling those magnets off now and then to clean and inspect behind them. DH put a large-ish decorative magnet on our mailbox and over the years enough rain & dirt got behind the mail box rusted and bubbled up, now the magnets don't stick any more. OTHO, maybe the ones for garage doors are stronger magnets to keep crud & moisture out?
Quite a few of us are ambivalent about Carole going home too. Yes, home is home. I know I'd want to go home. Probably*. But as much as you & Mark have done for her even before all this came about, I worry about the stress on you. I hope that should it not work out, there's an opening for her someplace just as nice as the current facility.
I hope you get some good rest, before you do fall out of the swing and hurt yourself. Your October Moon pattern is also a delightful stitch in spite of the linen I'm using.
* - The more I think, the more I'm not sure. If I were in a facility as nice as Carole is in, it's possible the fear of no openings if home didn't work out, or being frustrated sitting at home looking at things that I might not be able do, and all alone most of every day, maybe I would choose to stay there. IF I had stitching and reading (books and blogs) to keep me occupied when TV was boring and other residents got too tiring.
The door looks good to me. These projects are always more tedious than we expect I think.
I will hope and pray that all goes well with Carole returning home. My experience with such circumstances has been mixed. I suppose your involvement will be crucial, but, you need to take of yourself as well. A difficult situation for sure.
Take care of yourself.
Your new door looks fantastic!! Best of luck with Carole's return home. I hope it doesn't wear you out.

You have achieved the best available to you on the garage door and it looks great...in the eternal scheme of things, don't sweat with perfection.... I, too, am ambivalent about your usual care of Carole once she returns home, although she probably would be more content there. Please devise a plan that will be considerate of yours and Mark's welfare and your need for personal time. All this said in love.
Your stitching and garage door are looking great!
Love the soft colors you already have stitched.
As others I have concerns on the home coming of Carol because you both did before so much for her and you both cann't always o to her as there is something wrong or she feels lonely.
Is there a possibility that Carol can return to this home if she feels too lonely on her own?
Please take care and sending prayers for wisdom and lots of love, Truus from Holland
Well, as typical, I guess I am the contrary one....I really like the subtle color differential and texture change of the door. Then again, I don't recall what your old door looked like. (This getting old crap is really taking a toll on my memory me thinks.) Ahhh, what can I say about the Carole situation that you are not already thinking and others have already said? I'm seriously concerned about the increase demand she will be placing on you. But, yeah....I so get it - home is home. ~Robin~
I like you last line about Artie Johnson and Ruth Buzzi. I am glad you didn't fall over though. I think your new garage door looks great. Best wishes for getting Carole to adjust to being home. Please do not run yourself ragged trying to help. I know that you want to, but you must put yourself and your health firs.
Thinking of you and praying for the best outcome with Carole's situation.
She doesn't deserve what happened to her and you don't deserve the stress of helping her to feel better, in all the ways you have and have done so patiently and passionately.
God bless both of you and your lives ahead.
Your garage and door look beautiful.
Prayers and hugs,
Charlotte in Va.
Love the Arte Johnson and Ruth Buzzi reference. Hadn't thought about them in years. Appreciated the laugh.
