The critter, the cake, and the crab

I have lost count of the number of times this corner has been counted.  AUGH!!!!

I know the body is one stitch to the right, the outline for her name is not.  But the grass is three off!  So I stitched the bottom border hoping to shed light on the error.  Nope.  WTH?

So the critter will be stitched and the grass will grow around it, no more counting.  Even its shape can take a few errors so except for the tail that's sort of a shrub, and the wonky antlers, the rest will be filled as I go.

Now about that cake.  Carole's birthday (85) is Sunday.  The great grands go back to their mom tomorrow.  I thought one of the three adults would get a cake so she can celebrate with them.  I should have known better.  I had to buy a costly last minute cake and gifts from the kids for our (kids and Carole's) caregiver's birthday a month ago.  So last minute today, boxed cake.  They have skimped on package sizes in everything and no exception here.  The damn thing is less than an inch at edges!.  They used to be much higher.  From now on, scratch cakes from my 50 year old cookbooks.  I line the pan bottom and overlap the paper so easy lift out, at least that went well!

We bought Carole a curved transfer board, hoping it will allow her to get into a car.  The straight one is not usable when the car doors don't open wide enough.  Her wheekchaur can't get far enough forward to line up with the car's seat.  If this works, we'll take her for a ride to see leaf color and a Rita's custard.  She has not been in a car for several years, just the back of a transport van.  Fingers crossed.

And the crab?   Need I elaborate.  Hello!

Be safe.

That cake looks delicious despite the short depth. I do love a devil's food cake. I hope that curved board works to get Carole in and out of a car. I am sure she will enjoy the trip if you can make it. Happy Birthday to Carole! So sorry that the nasty frog has been visiting you lately. I am sure you will make that cross-stitch work out.

I agree with Cathie...the cake looks yummy all the same. Trade you a loaf of freshly-baked whole wheat bread for some cake????? Good luck with the critter building. ~Robin~ (And happy, happy, 85th to Carole!)

You are making great progress on the sampler. So pretty.
Hopefully the transfer board will work out for Carole. You are the best sister ever.
Happy birthday to Carole ;-)

Marly, your sampler is just beautiful. Sorry it’s giving you some trouble but will be worth it when done.
It absolutely drives me crazy that everything has been downsized in groceries. I’ve noticed that cake mixes have gotten smaller, too. WTH?? It’s still a 9 x 13 pan!! Happy Birthday to Carole. She’s so lucky to have such a wonderful sister and brother-in-law.
Enjoy your weekend! Cherie in WI

I haven't made a cake in a couple of years, so hadn't noticed the difference. I did make one Monday for DH birthday, put int he bundt pan, so I wouldn't have noticed anyway. But that, combined wiht using XL eggs, might explain how high it rose. Bummer that the adults didn't take action though - probably thought one of the others (or you. Again.) would cover their behinds. Hope Carole has a good day and the board works out.

I've said it many times - once completed, no one will notice the difference. If they do, good for their photographic memory of charts. If they say anything to you, kick them in the shins.

Hello Sweet Marly: Happy Birthday to Carole, it is sad that they did not think about a cake, you are very kind and loving to your sister. you are right about the box cakes, what the heck has happened to quality control.
I hope that curved board works for her.
I like this Sampler so much, I hope this all works out for the stitching, you are so close to the finish.

Happy 85th Birthday to Carole. She has been through so much and really is a trooper. Hoping she'll get to take a ride to see the Fall leaves and a treat. God bless her !
Maybe we'll need to buy two box mixes if we want a good sized cake ? Made one with apple pie filling in it, butter cream icing. It was delicious.
Happy Autumn weekend.

Your sampler looks beautiful and in the early days, there were also mistakes in the sampler and nowdays we think it is the chart.
So don't worry about your miscounting and finish this one-- it will be beautiful.
Happy Birthday to Carole.
