Reverse painting

Is that what painting one side of glass is called?

I'm assuming these were my Polish grandmother's from the writing on the backs.

The cloth tape holding them closed had deteriorated in a section which allowed me to open the glass.

But how did the florals appear through the black paint background on the reverse side?  Impossible to fill around the details, and the brush strokes don't show that.  Things that make me want to go ... hmmmmm.

Do I want them?  Not really.  The black paint is lifting from the glass in spots, could be touched up I'm sure.  Store in the attic where they were found at Carole's?

My eye bubble is not really an issue now that it is smaller, just a nuisance and should be gone in a few more weeks.  When I explained to a friend how they inject this gas bubble into your eyeball, she got quite weak in the knees.  I may be able to stitch depending on where I hold the work.  I saw a drum finish on a floss tube from BBD's book And Blossom as the Rose and plan to order.  Nothing else in the book I want.

Today I mailed a small photo we had printed of Carole last Christmas to a few of her very close friends.  I hope that isn't inappropriate, but with phones, having such mementos are not common as years ago.  It seems as if she has been gone for a long time, yet thinking I will see her in a few days.

Roads are high traffic, stores are chaotic, and unlike many years ago, I want to get away from it all.  I much prefer home and watching the video of Lauren's home and unmatched Christmas collections over and over.

And of course, floss tube.

Have a peaceful day.

Yes, those pieces look like reverse painting. I believe the detail and lighter colors are painted first...allowed to dry...and then the dark background so the lighter things still show through. A little like pysanky eggs but no wax required. I think the photo is very appropriate and will be a treasure to those receiving one. And your summary of the feeling of being gone a long time and yet expecting to see them any time is all too familiar. Yeah....Lauren's home, collections and displays are amazing. I won't admit how many times I've already watched it. ~Robin~

Yes, it's reverse paint on glass. Most of what I've seen, the design is painted first, then the black background applied over it. On these, I wonder if the black background was masked off or scraped away where the flowers were to go, then the flowers painted? Very pretty, and I'm amazed they are as good of condition as they are after who knows how long in the attic.
And from the last post - I like the taller pine backsplash!
So glad your eye bubble is getting smaller. I get a bit weak in the knees when I think of a shot in the eyeball too, so your friend is in good company! I hope the hospital situation is resolved soon and doesn't result in a super long drive to get to one.

Merry Christmas Marly and Family: I do like the reverse painting on glass, it is amazing how the colors have stayed so bright in all these years.
I am happy to hear that the bubble is getting smaller.
I think the photo you gave to her friends is a lovely idea, you are very kind to do so.

Cape on the Corner is one of my favorite channels! The tour of her parent's home at Christmastime is my all-time favorite.

I think the photo is most appropriate. I did the same when my MIL died. I found an older photo of her and sent it out with the notice to the friends of hers listed in her address book. Does age make us less tolerant of all the hustle and bustle out there? It exhausts me so I understand. I've been thankful for all the cheer I've found here online. Yes floss tube & definitely Lauren's home tour. Merry Christmas

Wow! The paintings are absolutely gorgeous, I love them. I hope you find a special place to hang them, what a treasure. I wonder if the glass can be touched up with paint, does anyone even do such work anymore? Merry Christmas!

So very kind of you to send a photo to her friends!
My sister passed away in 1998 and I have still that I will phone her to tell something that happend.....so it is very normal of you to think you will Carole see in some days.
Love the glass paintings, they are beautiful! My mother made these paintings too and also in black& white. I now regret that I didn't take some of these paintings when she moved house.
Will watch the floss tube.
Take care, Truus from Holland

I love the idea of you sending Carole's special friends a photo of her, Marly, and I'm sure they will treasure it. That is great news to hear that your eye bubble has shrunk and that you can return to stitching soon. I can see where you got your painting ability from those pieces you found in the attic. Thank you for the link to Lauren's home--all I can say is "WOW!!" Hope you have a peaceful weekend and last few days before Christmas ♥

The reverse paintings, though not your style, I presume, are very cool. Most unusual.
I'm sure Carole's friends will be touched by the picture. What a kind gesture.
Happy you will once again be stitching soon.
Thank you for the shout out on my home's video. I truly am the crazy Christmas lady!!!
