Follow the rules - who..me?

Hello people.  How's your candy supply?  Mine is in my husband's car and he is at work.  At midnight, I unlocked his car and threw all of those treats inside.  It's what I do when I am desperately lacking any semblance of will power.  It's warmer today, the sun is out, and they will probably be a melted mess when he comes home.
I finished the patterned part of Santa and as usual, didn't follow the rule.  I don't know who told me or where I read it, but the lightest color in a pattern should be stitched last.  I think I see why.
Trying to stitch the background and leaving the pattern area bare wasn't something I could focus on.  I prefer doing the design first which makes the fill in so much easier.  But here's what I'm thinking - correct me if I'm wrong.  When you go down and come up with your stitch, it kind of overlaps or pushes aside the adjoining stitch's thread.  On higher counts with one thread, probably not, but I see where the 632 kind of prevents a clean looking 644 stitch.  Can you see what I mean?
The antlers and legs look like dots instead of connected stitches.  Am I making sense?  I'm going back to redo some of these areas, the legs and antlers for sure.  Unless I forget.  So what do you think?  Is this really a rule that I learned somewhere along the way and never understood why, or doesn't it matter?  Does it make sense that the existing stitches would not be connected because the final stitch would break the connection?  Have I had too much candy and just stitched poorly?  Regardless, this is going to make a sweet sack for greens.  I really like my color changes.
Unfortunately, I can't say that for the new gallons of paint I purchased this morning.  The color I chose for trim is an old sample from Pratt & Lambert called Ventana.  They used to sell it locally and I have samples of wonderful shades of old colonial colors.  Lowe's mixed the gallon from my sample and got it pretty close.
This is it on the top board, with the sample card on the wall, and my existing color beneath.  Not happy.  Beautiful color but much lighter than I expected.  They mixed it very close, and I like the soft shade, but it's too light.  I really thought I had this licked, but we are always fooled by those sample cards.  Ninety nine % of the time, it's much lighter than we expect.  The pinkish undertone to this neutral beige wall paint is being covered, again, tomorrow, with Benjamin Moore's 974.  Very light, no green, no yellow, no pink, more of a dull white like a whitewash.  The other neutral I found without a cast of any sort in my rooms, is Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground which will be used elsewhere.  Why aren't I using it in this room?  Because I gave them the wrong sample to mix.  That's OK.  They're both bland.  The foyer's doors and trim will get one coat of a shade almost the same as it is now, and I can start thinking about which stencils to use.  Good grief.  Choices.  Wonder how long this will take.  Wait a minute.  It's November in a few days.  Are you kidding me?  Didn't we all just post about starting the month of October?  November?  Now I'm really really not happy.
I can't email you Kristen but yes, chocolate (and caffeine) exacerbates hot flashes.
I don't drink, I no longer smoke, so I refuse to give up chocolate.  I enjoy it more than I detest the flashes.
Welcome to new followers!
Enjoy your week and stay safe.
Thanks for visiting!

Think you are correct in that the lighter color should be stitched after the surrounding darker color...however, how many people will notice? My vote is do whatever is easier!

Funny, my full size Hershey bars (hubby insists on getting them) is currently in his truck too. I would so be in that stash with a big jar of peanut butter!
I think Santa is looking great!
Have a great Halloween!

I say leave the antlers and legs alone. They look fine. Why make life any more difficult than it has to be...right??? Haha

Paint colors!!! Don't EVEN get me started! Our livingroom was a "beige" (painted by our realtor's contractor) when we moved in 6 years ago and I couldn't figure out why it was dark in there. It's a small room any way and I just felt closed in. There's a difference between "cozy" and "closed in". A couple years ago we painted the room white and it immediately felt so much better. It's hard to find shades of cream (beige/tan, etc.) without tones of pink, yellow, blue and so on. You never really see it until it's on the wall!

Well Marly, again I am no help here with the stitches as I don't do it...but - doing the lighter ones does make sense at least in this case as I can see where it is going....dots like you say and yes I do think doing them first would make them an X and the red will fill in nicely around it. For someone who doesn't do this kind of stitching (at least not any more) it makes sense to me.

As for the paint...I LOVE THE NEW COLOR - I guess maybe because it is almost what we have throughout our house. It goes with whatever colors you put with it.

Oh....I could not resist - while on the floor cleaning out cupboards yesterday the bag of treats was on a shelf right at eye level....hmmm, what's a gal to do. I opened it and ate 2!

I'll be interested in seeing if there really is a difference as to what gets stitched first... I'm self taught, so I just go with what's easiest to count. Thank goodness tomorrow is Halloween... so I can pass the candy along to someone that has a better metabolism than me... lol! Lowe's usually does a good job of color scanning... though sometimes the satin paints mix a bit lighter. The same color mixed in a flat tint base might match your paint swatch better...

I like your Santa's coat and I wouldn't remove any of the stitches. I might turn it over and give them a little pull to tighten them up.

I don't have a solution for your paint problems. We have pine and cedar paneling throughout the whole house.

PS Hope there isn't a huge chocolate puddle in hubby's truck.

I'm shocked that November is only a little over 24 hours away! It's scary how fast time flies. I'm so looking forward to Halloween being over cause I'm what the medical community calls a pre- diabetic. Then Christmas is just around the corner with all the boxed chocolate! My nerves are shot to say the least!
Love the new paint colours..so pretty...love neutrals and it goes with any decor! The Santa is so cute! Happy Halloween

I agree on chocolate. Can never give it up. As for your stitching -- yes, I've definitely noticed that problem you're having. I tend to do the background and then fill in when I have the patience to do it, specifically for that reason. It can be a pain, but it does make for nicer looking stitches.

Thanks for the great information. I had never heard that the light colors should be stitched last. I have had the same problem you have with stitching the white first. Makes sense!

Marly - love the Santa and the colors you've chosen. I'm with you, I'll never give up chocolate. This time of year, the Kit Kats seem to just disappear.

I remember learning the same thing ... stitch white last. I know what you mean about threads overlapping/pushing others aside ... not only the way you've stitched this but even if you'd have stitched the white first & then the red. It's always a battle for me to get it all neat.

It's funny but I was taught to stitch the lighter colours first.
I find that especially with white the colour stays cleaner and keeps the shape of the pattern better.
White thread seems to pick up threads of the darker colour and just looks dirty... I've noticed this most with red and black (like Santas)

never knew about the rule of dark vs light; but I found stitching the light first keeps it neater; never was much of a person who liked sweets, but I've found ever since menopause, I've developed a fondness for dark chocolate. I do love your Santa.
