JANE!!!

Jane Ballard arrived yesterday, beautifully wrapped with paper and ribbon, packaged well.  She's a big one.  I unfolded the chart, and unfolded the chart, and then unfolded the chart.  Twelve sections on one sheet!  I'll be folding to 11 x 17 sized sections, or 8 1/2 x 11,  or 8 1/2 x 14,  while standing at the copy machine in Staples.  Some smart ass will hold up a smart ass phone and film me wrestling with it. Folding and unfolding trying to get all the pages, until a temper tantrum erupts and a piece of paper larger than a sixth grader goes flying.  I wonder if they will have audio.  Hope not.  This won't be easy and I need to be careful so I don't damage the chart.  I color them, use highlighter, make notes, and do a bit of damage to the original which is why I copy more involved samplers.   Even if I didn't, this would be too unmanageable for me and my Magma.  My Magma and I.  Might be a song in there.

Here's progress on Eliz - got to the unusual letters and the thread's shading is coming out better than I expected.  Working on her a little at a time.  I'm really exhausted from pushing and pulling that machine up and down.  My sister's did me in too.  I can't even explain and don't want to. Suffice it to say that when I went to the second level of her cape cod to check out storage space, I was speechless.  Wearing heavy knee high rubber boots, I made at least 30 trips up and down carrying heavy loads of "stuff".  Two days of this and only a small dent.  Didn't even begin to clear her first floor bedroom or treat the fleas.  Came home and worked on the leaves afterward so I am really beat.  Many of us have attics and basements filled with items we don't want to give up, but when is it too much?  Just because we have the room for storage, does that give license to pack it full?  If we don't need it, don't use it, why keep it?  Because our moms taught us to never throw anything away?  Donating is not trashing it.  Let it go!!!  Everything I brought down, she had to "go through".  NO.  If I am working my ass off to clean (I would need a high pressure fireman hose for that and I already have the boots)...(a fireman would be nice too), I will determine what goes.  Sheets and blankets that don't fit your bed - gone.  Mom's tablecloths that are stained - gone.  Books from school - gone.  Afghans, comforters, clothes you never wear - gone. Your son's, grandson's, and ex DIL's old stuff - gone. Junk - GONE!  Her heart valve and knees have prevented her from climbing stairs for many years so if it's been up there that long, she hasn't needed it, she hasn't missed it - GONE!!  I honestly don't know if I can continue because it's overwhelming and she is too involved and slowing me down.  This is not a weekend project.
To treat my aching body, I fried myself two day old donuts which I haven't done in quite some time.  You see that shine?  That's a thin crispy crust.  Heaven.
Mark is off Thursday and Friday so I'll relax a little and maybe go for a ride to enjoy the sunshine that is forecast.  Carole got her monitor's report and they are still leaning toward the AV node ablation.  Family doc recommended a trip to Cleveland Clinic, I say Pittsburgh.  We'll see.  She wants to wait a while before making an appointment. That's right Carole.  Wait until the middle of winter when the roads are covered in ice and snow is blowing sideways, and then ask your afraid to drive paranoid panicky directionally challenged menopausingly bitchy sister to be trapped in a car for hours while she preaches about your messy house.  A trip to remember.

Enjoy what's left of October and have a safe weekend.

Thanks for visiting.

Sorry this is such a big mess Marly. I agree with Robin -- if someone could distract your sister (take her out to lunch??). And, yes, Eliza is looking great. Can't wait to see your start on Jane...good luck with the copying.

I was thinking the same thing as Robin! How about said son and grandson!!!! Why can they not help?!

My thoughts also, where are the son or grandson? If there is a window put some things in a plastic bag and throw it out the window, that way she'll never see it.

How pretty Elizabeth is!!! Loving those letters! (If only I didn't hate stitching letters.)

In my experience your sister's the only one who can clear her clutter...except that she has health issues which make it so that she also can't (right?).

I was feeling very "stagnant" about the house this late summer so about a month ago I thought "ugh I'm choking here--what does Feng Shui say!?!?" I need a new way to "interact" with this place. " eventually found a book which helped some, but would help a beginner on the clutter-bug hoarding spectrum even more. (I have been adamantly anti-clutter for years.) Karen Kingston's "Clear your clutter with Feng Shui" it's really not that mystical, and if it is to your eyes, who cares--you don't need/aren't ready for that part.

You are hilarious! I enjoy your posts. I follow many many blogs but just look at the pictures mostly and seldom actually read them. There is no time. But yours I read. 😉

I copy charts too, but to enlarge all that fine print...

Good idea, throw some of the junk in bags out the window... She will never know it's gone. Sounds like the job is pretty overwhelming. Good luck!

OMG I feel your pain. Tie her to a chair in a different room and just start pitching. She will never know what has been pitched. She can't get back up into the attic anyway.

You tell her when YOU will be available to drive her, not the other way around.

You are going way above and beyond here. I wish you all the luck in the world.

You must be truly exhausted, Marly--I can't even imagine! I have been taking a clue from my mother and going through closets and drawers lately and finding piles to give to Goodwill--and you know it feels great to just let it go...

Your new sampler looks like a huge challenge to me--I just can't handle big things like that very well, but I'm sure you'll do great. Love the way Elizabeth is turning out.

If you do end up coming to Pittsburgh for Carole's procedure, please know that if I can help in any way, I'd be happy to... Hang in there!

Hello! It sounds like you have a pretty busy time ahead of you at Carole's house, in between your regular 'life'! Throwing things out a second story window sounds like a good idea, especially if it is heavy bags of clothing! Save the stairs for things that won't fit! Like you know, if she has not been upstairs in years due to her health, then she has not missed any of the stuff up there and does not need to 'go through' it before tossing. Everything you listed surely does need to be tossed in my eyes too! Take some time to stitch on Eliz and start on Jane if you want! Once you get it copied! Hugs!

Oh boy... that is tough duty for you! Love the idea of throwing things out of the upstairs window....When we helped clear out my aunt's house, there was a dumpster placed in the driveway and stuff just got tossed from every direction!
Always love to see your stitching!

I know exactly what you mean. Went through this with my Mom's house when we moved her to assisted living. Totally overwhelming. Good news, my Mom wasn't there, bad news, my sister was who had to go through everything before we threw it away. Good grief!!!

I have diabetes in my family, so I did not get to eat the doughnuts.

Good luck! Try to stay sane.

I think the vote is pretty unanimous to open an upstairs window and heave ho! All I can say is I am exhausted just reading about all you are facing. Carole is very lucky and blessed indeed to have you as a sister and oh my goodness those doughnuts look good.

Oh Marly I just love your posts! You sound like me (really you want to do what when?!?!?)
Good luck my friend and I hope you can get someone to help with the cleaning! I make copies of all my charts to work from as I hi-light and I loose them LOL

I agree with the bagging, opening of the window and with a "good bye useless items" "chuck" them out of the window.. We all assume there is a window..
I would love a doughnut of any kind.. My son found out, recently, that he has diabetes, so the sugary items are not here any more.. I'll have to sneak some for myself when I go to the store and eat it on the way home.. There's always a way.
Take care of Marly.

You are an amazing sister. I wrote a longer message and lost it, so happily you are spared my rambling. I understand Carole's inclination to keep everything (I have a bit of a hoarder gene myself) and the process of letting stuff go is hard, but when it's done she really will feel less burdened - and you will too. The best is if you can find things to donate, then it doesn't feel like such a 'loss' when you know you can bless someone else with something.
Props to you for not solving the mess problem with lighter fluid and a match - it's got to be tempting!

Yay, you got Jane. If you have any problems just give me a holler. She's a beauty. You will have yo get Rebecca Cullin by SL to go with her. That one can be done two ways as well. If you do the cross stitch version, it's a little bit easier to read.

I think that you are a wonderful sister. You are like me with having a wonderful relationship with our Sisters.

Oh dear. Now you have me worrying about our house and our future of kids going through our junk. lol! Dear dear. Love your stitching. Take it easy at your sister's -- don't you have sore knees?? Hope there is a good decision for Carole on her ablation. :(

Hi Marly, I am so sorry for you. I do not think I would have your patience, but then I am your sister's age and my stamina and patience flew the coup long time ago. Never the less, You are being a wonderful sister. Can I adopt you??? I don't have an attic or cellar or even an extra bedroom and I think like you ..."get rid of it".

Peace and Blessings to a Fantastic Lady, Barb

You are a saint! What a task! I try to make the rule(on myself that is) if I haven't worn or used something in a year, I don't need ti! That works pretty good for me.

OMG, Marly, I think your sister and my sister were twins separated at birth. She waits until we have the ice storm of the century to make all her dr. and dental appts. and asks me to drive. It sounds as though sis has trouble making decisions. Just a guess. There's a special place in heaven for you. You'll be beside me and we will be cross stitching our behinds off!

Cleaning out someone house is a mobster of a job. I think we have all done it and hated it too. Having your sister go through everything is unrealistic. You have to just look fast and then donate or throw out! When I moved here ( second marriage) cleaning out new husbands attic was awful ( his first wife had died) so you have to be delicate but I just held things up and said quickly does " this own you anything" if not out it went. Good luck.....you do deserve a treat or seven.

My heart goes out to both you and your sister. You may or may not have heard of the website for FlyLady at http://flylady.net, but it may give you some peace. Even if it sounds like common sense to you it may be a light bulb moment for your sister. Loving the sampler. :-)

Eliz looks wonderful! When I get large patterns like you got, I make a working copy too, but where I go they can copy posters so that's what I have done and the then I can fold it or cut it to the size easiest to work with.

So sorry to hear about all the stuff at your sister's house. You need a whole crew to help you. If I lived close enough, I'd be there helping and enlist other family members to take your sister out for the day.
