..minutia - you know...trivial crap.
Hello people. How's your weather? We have and will continue to have, high humidity, heat, storms, and rain. That means the barometric pressure is falling....and my joints are terrible. Dr. James Fant (University Specialty Clinics) stated "if the barometric pressure is decreased, then that would allow the inflamed tissue to swell more, simply because there is less atmospheric pressure holding the tissue back. If there are nerves in that tissue, then those nerves would be stimulated by that swelling and that would translate into pain." Well la-d-da. Sounds science fictiony but the size of my swollen foot/ankle and my right index finger joints prove his point.
That's not the only reason I didn't get the project done that I wanted to share today, but a big contributor. I am planning a giveaway of a little design I worked up and wanted to stitch it as the offer. I would have finished it before this front came in, but I changed it four times. I have four different ways to stitch it, except for one element. So I will yak about other things.
Remember the post on how I stabilize the top edge of samplers when hanging unframed? I used horsehair braid from JoAnn's. It's in the boxes on the bottom shelf, notions wall. Well I bought something else this time, flexible boning. The traditional boning is not flat and much stiffer. This is also very stiff, narrow, and there is no way it will allow anything to sag.
I put it out in the sun with weights on the ends to get rid of the roll shape from the box. The much flatter horsehair is perfect for small and medium samplers, but for big girls like Lucy and Eliza, I will slip it out and insert this boning. Both had double strips and held up well, but I want to test this.
I've had this dried grapefruit for a few years, thinking it would make a great pumpkin head for a sewn figure. Look at the nose on this guy. Paint the eyes, drill for a neck pole and give him a hat. But I never will. Would dried fruit crack if drilled? It's really hard and thick so I doubt it but who knows.
For those of you with smooth cooktops, I've tried the homemade concoctions for cleaning and they were a pain without great results. Bought all the top names and did not like the waxy feel left behind or the cleaning power. Until I tried Affresh. Oh my. Shake it, a few drops smeared onto the burned area, five minutes later it is easily wiped off. They don't carry it locally so I ordered online through Home Depot and had them ship it to my local store free. Great great stuff.
And if anyone has soapstone water spots, placements rings, all the marks left from anything set on it, let me know how you get rid of them. It's been waxed and cleaned many many times, tried the oil, it's always looking like a mess. I thought it may be our water, but distilled, spring, bottled, all do the same. It looks fabulous when first waxed or oiled, but it needs to be done every three days and you can still see the outline of the ever increasing spots.

Thanks for visiting.

The humidity is awful here too! I'm excited to see your pattern - looks adorable!
I always like your advice on cleaning products and will try to find Affresh. You gave me the best tip years ago on keeping my pot and pans clean and shiny..."Bar Keepers Friend" is the best stuff I've ever used! Now I'll have to look for Affresh for my cook top. Home made cleaners sound wonderful and healthier...but, they do NOT do the job! Sorry about your joints...we have had wet weather here in MIchigan as well....can't get a darn thing done in the yard!
Bud looks quite cozy in his shady spot. Hope your joints get to feeling better. Look forward to seeing your finished project.

Hi Marly,
So sorry for your poor joints!!! I used to have so much trouble/pain with my fibro when I lived back East with all the temp changes and KNEW that a storm was coming before the Weather people did!! Since moving out to the West, I have so much less trouble! Wish I could send some dry weather your way!!
Great info on the boning and the cleaner!! You always offer the best info!
Love Bud's, "CAT CAVE" and I see he does too!! So clever of you!!
I know who ever wins your offer will be happy!! I look at my heart I won from you and am so happy I was the lucky one!!
Take care and hope the Advil helps!
Warm Hugs~

A huge storm is just passing through northern Ohio. I'm hoping the barometric pressure is soon kind to you. No fun being achy.
Thank you for always sharing your tricks of the trade with us. You are most kind.
Hugs :)

I am in the same boat as you Marly. The barometric pressure controls my pain. yuck. Otherwise I am doing great with the PT. Can't control the weather though.
Hazy hot humid... ugh...thanks for the info on the cooktop cleaner. Found it on Amazon and I have Prime so it will be here Wed...hope the weather cooperates and you are feeling better soon.
We're having a lot of thunder right now.. The weatherman says it will continue to be hot and humid until Wed.
I will tell my daughter about your explanation about barometric pressure.. She's having trouble with one knee.
Bud has the perfect summer cottage. So cute and so thoughtful of you.
I hope your aches and pains will subside. I head for the Advil at the first sign of pain. Good stuff.
Have a great week ahead.. I plan to finish my two Americana pears that you shared....Have stitched them now to put a backing one them.....tomorrow (Mon.) is the day....weather or not.

I tried working in the yard this morning and it was so humid it felt like it was raining. Did not last out there very long.
I hope your pain subsides soon. Looking forward to seeing yout project.
I finally have an explanation of why I have so much pain when the barometric pressure drops. We've had 4.5 inches of rain in the last 24 hours and more on the way. Sorry that you're having so much pain too. Thanks for the info on Affresh too.
Hope your joints feel better soon.
Thanks for the info on the boning, that's a great idea.
Bud seems to like his hide-away. :)

I'm right there with you my friend with the Arthritis....my knees and the two pointer fingers hurt like the dickens...and my fingers are so bent it's crazy...like it happened over night. Wish there was a cure for Arthritis!!!
Love your piece you are working on - very lovely and patriotic.
Such a nice little area for kitty - isn't it cute how they find areas like this to sleep in (even though you made this one I mean). We have a cubby in one of our cupboards in the dining room and our one kitty loved to get in there and sleep. When she was ill and 'passing' she lived in that cubby.
I will certainly have to find Affresh - I don't like using scouring powder on mine - I think it scratches too much and soft scrub doesn't really take away the stains. Thanks for sharing.

try vinegar for the water spots-I have soapstone and only use mineral oil to maintain-vinegar and an old toothbrush will get rid of the lime deposits
I have all soapstone counters and sink and I have never used oil or wax (I was warned about the water rings after oiling). I just scrub with Dawn liquid which degreases and removes olive oil stains etc. The soapstone is slowly and slightly darkening (3 years out) but remains a dark grey/blue. I have never had water spots as a result. I would imagine that with regular scrubbing (scrubby side of sponge) with Dawn or even Dawn "power clean", eventually you will stop having the problem since the degreasing agents will remove the oil (soapstone is nonporous so the oil is just sitting on top of the surface). However you have to live with the blue/grey that will eventually naturally darken to black....the nice part is the "authentic" darker areas of heavy use which give that nice look we all love
I have been enjoying having a bit of a browse through some of your blog posts. You have so many pretty projects that you've shared that I thought I'd mention that I host a weekly Stitchery Link Party for all things hand embroidered and I'd love to have you come link up this post (or one of your other ones.) http://www.supermomnocape.com/2015/06/15/vintage-embroidery-monday-stitchery-link-party-10/
I do hope you'll come join in the fun!
Thanks for all your great tips in this post !
Darn arthritis!
