What do you use to learn a new stitch? I got out all the books for stitch reference and wanted to browse for some that I will need to learn for the sweet bags. I've found several stitches that are in one book and not the others, so I don't rely on just one for reference. Could be that they are under a different name, but I also browsed the illustrations. The nun's stitch (or open sided square) which I needed to finish edges, was only found in Linen Stitches. I remember looking for the turkey too and not all had it. That one, Needleworker's Companion, and the J&P Coats are my favorites. J&P Coats features 100 stitches in a flat 34 page booklet that doesn't take any room in a stitching bag. I've found so many in that little booklet that aren't in any of the others and I almost tossed it years ago. The Complete DMC one is going to the library sale. Includes knit and crochet and I don't care for the illustrations at all. Online reference and video is better, but if I don't feel like taking the time to get on the computer or it's not convenient, having one of the these smaller books in my bag works out fine.
I didn't know the name of this stitch and searched the illustrations for it. Fairly sure it is the nun's stitch. This is why I should have kept a stitching journal for the samplers. I don't remember color changes, special stitches, changes to the chart, fabric count or color. Big surprise, huh? I have to say that forgetting specific words in a conversation is really starting to worry me more. And the frustration makes a few other choice words leave my mouth. I don't seem to forget those!
I'm still going through fabric and found these oldies. Anyone remember Back Street Designs? I haven't received my second order of BOAF linen yet. Waiting for cabinet hinges too. My tracking number for the hinges shows Oklahoma received them on June 5 with no other activity. Today is the 10th. The other order left Oakland, CA on the 6th. No other entries. The info was always up to date before but lately nothing is scanned until the day of delivery.
Went to the antique mall for the second time in months, and I didn't have the same reaction as last time. I thought about Patti and felt more acceptance of her passing, didn't enjoy browsing, but handled it much better. Thought I would show you what might make a good thread cabinet. $295, on legs, and about 18" deep but the drawers are not divided. Still a great piece. Didn't buy it.
Isn't it strange how many Sundays are in a week? I know I said that would be the post day but I've been out of sorts, mixed up, and yakky.

I have some of the same books that you have. Other good ones are Eileen Bennett's "The Red Book of Sampler Stitches" and "A Notebook of Pulled Thread Stitches."

I just wanted to let you know that I'm forgetting loads of words too. But I was told it's normal and now I use the word 'thingy' a lot. I mean a lot.
It is the Nun's Stitch - you are quite right. Wish I could put a picture of it on here but don't think it will let me do that. I have saved a photo of it and it's one stitch I particularly like stitching. Heck I like stitching most stitches.
I'm so sorry about your friend Patti but glad that you are feeling a bit better about her passing. You do know that Patricia is a very unusual name don't you. There were only around 3 of us in my class at school way back one. I was just being a bit sarcastic.

I have the book, Crazy Stitches, and also have a book I love called, STITCH SAMPLER, by Lucinda Ganderton! Such great illustrations and explanation of the stitches!!
I know how you feel about your friend Patti as Fri. will be one year ago that my mom passed away!! Still painful, but it has gotten better and I am thankful for the good memories that seem to come to mind!! I know she would want that for me and I'm sure Patti would feel the same for you!!

Lots of Sundays are just fine with me. I always enjoy your posts. I hope that soon, going to antique shops will remind you of the happy times, not just the sad. That takes lots of time!

I was pleased to see Linen Stitches in your stack; it is an old friend of mine. I've also used the Anchor Book of Counted Thread Embroidery Stitches for years; the poor thing looks the part, too. More recently, it's been The Proper Stitch and the DK Stitch Sampler - DK Publishers does everything so well. I have the Embroiderer's Handbook, but the DK and O'Stein's illustrations speak to me more clearly. Your comment about words made me laugh out loud. You do forget some nouns and terms - but there are certain turns of phrase that never seem to be very far away, even when you don't necessary want them to be there!

I use to teach high school and after the age of 48, I told the kids to get use to the fact that I had many brain farts - well manybe not quite in those words . . . .
I am so sorry about the loss of your dear friend. I lost my dear friend Bev when she was 42. She was the sweetest, Kindest ,most soft spoken person you could know. That was 23 years ago now and I still miss her. I think of all the good fun times we had and I can always remember something that brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart.
I have the coats and clark little booklet and I love it too.
I really love that cabinet I think it would be a great place to store threads. Happy Sundays.

So you can use the nun stitch to stabilize fringed edges? Have never heard of that stitch, but glad to know about it. I have a chart for a sweet tea cloth that should be fringed, but didn't want to do all the work of stitching if the fringe would ravel. (I'm new to this.)

I also bought some fabric that was Back Street very long ago,a couple of years ago I decided to use it for a Halloween project. La D Da pattern Something Wicked.It has turned out so well wished I could get more of the fabric. Like the homespun look to the fabric. Love hearing about the cats.
