Hello people! In the midst of cleaning and decorating, I came across the unframed samplers hanging on the ladder, pinned to the wall, and pinned to a cabinet. Do you have a sampler wall or do you spread the love around? At one time I had them all in the dining room (very small) and it felt closed in. So I kept just these pieces there,
moved some to the family room, and from there I decided to not frame newly completed pieces.
Wanting to consolidate them, I pinned them to the very narrow hall leading to the front door, across from the powder room. I made a skinny stand and added that to the wall. This entire hall and foyer will probably be paneled and painted, maybe just one wall, but thought I would temporarily add them to see if it would be a good spot. Well yes it would. This hall enters the family room and the samplers would be visible, and away from any direct light or heat registers. Boning needs to be added to some tops, some edges need sewn, but I will still leave enough for mounting if I ever decide to frame. Right now they are hanging by one pin and crumpled. But should all the others be moved here? Not sure there would be enough room, especially with Lucy and Sally. Maybe one large framed piece in a room and the rest filling the hall. Adding a peg rail on the opposite side could be for the bags and smaller hangings. Once they are pressed and properly pinned, I'll have some time to decide. Mixing the framed with unframed would not look good - what do you think? Frame them all? Oh wait. Just had an idea. The large empty wall in the new room could be for the unframed, where more primitive cabinets will be. The framed should be moved to the hall. How's that? I usually come up with something when I'm typing a post but it never would have entered my mind otherwise. I think I have a plan. What's yours?

Marly your home is beautiful! You have so many great elements I really don't think that you could go wrong with whichever way you decide to decorate. I'm not sure why it never occurred to me to display unframed samplers the way you have - it's wonderful. It's kind of super-primitive, isn't it? When you get to the task of reinforcing them with boning, etc. will you post about that? I'd love to learn how to do it.

Whatever you decide, they will be beautiful. I have most of them in my bedroom and a few spread all over the house.
Your home is beautiful. Your sampler collection is wonderful and whatever you do will be great. I like the sampler walls of others but the few I have are spread out around the house.
All I can think about is all the stitches you've made. You have a marvelous collection.........framed and unframed.
Wouldn't they be more protected framed ? Whatever you decide will be wonderful.

I am a "cluster" hanger. Most are framed in old frames and in 3 rooms - Great room has 9 on one wall; one bedroom has 10 on one wall and another bedroom has 12 on one wall. Then there are one here and one there, including attached to the front or sides of cabinets - unframed. It may sound like a sampler overload but what can I say....just love those darn things. So enjoy seeing into your home - I could move in and be soooo cozy. Personally, I like the idea of a wall of samplers going down the hall-gives visitors a chance at a close up look. Can't wait to see what you decide.

Marly, you have inspired me, I am going to sew the edges of my samplers and hang them unframed.I have so many and framing is expensive, and they are doing me no good stuck in a drawer! Now to get hubby to move some of his pics of wolves and tigers. I love the man dearly but his taste in decor is questionable at best.
Love your xmas decorations! Love the door hooks. Gonna do some of those too. Do you suppose hubby will ban me from your blog? ;)

There's no way I could hang my samplers unframed, not behind glass. I am not good at dusting! lol! I know you've had problems with glass and samplers. But I just can't do it any other way! (Glad to hear Carole is improving. That must be such a relief for everyone!)
Beautiful samplers! I hang mine as you do along with laying them in my wooden bowls. Unlike Margaret, I don't worry about dust (and I have a lot), I would rather enjoy them now ;)

Marly - For all your seeming "mishegahs" you are really focused and gifted in bringing "collections" into focus.....At the Hall. all samplers line the curved staircase and some spill over to various rooms, but all are framed... I don't have your sense of daring... Just love this glimpse into your marvelous collection...

Love your samplers. I have a 17th century band sampler I hope to finish someday. Glad Carole is better. Good news.
