What do you do with the old white cotton gloves that our moms and grandmothers wore? Personally, I love the look of that old style but can't get my swollen joints into them. All are very substantial yet soft cotton. I've already used her fancy hankies for sachets and envelopes, these items have limited fabric. So what can I do with them? I think a heart shape would work out nicely for some of the glove designs. Filling would be minimal since the hearts will be very small, maybe just a lining of cotton fleece layers. Or maybe cut the backs into squares and sew into a pieced pouch or little pillow. More likely, I'll put them back into the bag with her doilies and they will be hidden as they have been. I'm all talk and no action.

If you did make into hearts fill with lavender may have to put an extra layer of muslin behind the decorative holes so lavender doesn't leak. out. Or you could just appliqué the heart to a piece of needle work, maybe with you moms name in the sampler.
I'm the kind who would save the gloves for no reason at all. I'm so bad about upcycling things. I remember wearing gloves to church when i was small. And black patent leather mary janes.
Wow. I am waiting to see what you do. I could never cut them. It is so nice to have some things from family that we take out from time to time and take a trip down memory lane.

You could make a shadow box with them.
I am going to do that.
I have Mom's glasses, some cameos, a piece of lace knitted by Grandma, etc.
All of the craft stores sell the shadow boxes, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc.

I also have quite a few pairs of my mom's gloves from the 1940s and 1950s...whites, black and a beautiful pair in a salmony pink. I could never cut them, but that's just sentimental me.
I have a bag of gloves in my closet. I can't bear to part with them. I also have over-the-elbow gloves that I wore to formal balls in the 70's - a lifetime ago!
I would frame them.
Hello Marly, Your mother's gloves are lovely. They are reminiscent from a treasured past. Thank you for sharing them. I like Marilyn's idea of a shadow box or simply placing them out on occasion for a special reminder of your beloved mother. SAH
Lovely gloves...I like the idea of keeping them as-is...will have to share the photos of the gloves with her because she worked the glove counter at Strouss in downtown Youngstown and has many stories of the elegant ladies who purchased them in the early 40's...

Like Marilyn said, I'm also doing a shadow box of memories for both my daughters and me. Not quite up to it yet since it's not even two months. I think the gloves, along with other items, a picture, would be so nice in a shadow box.
Marly - what beautiful gloves...I had white gloves for many occasions when I was young - it was the thing even in the late 40's/50's when I was growing up.
I personally would not 'make' something from them...but I would use them as they are in frames to enjoy the full benefit of them...just look at the edging on the one pair. So beautiful. But I too, like you would probably put them away again and contemplate on a later date. But I hope you do something with them sooner than later as they are so lovely.

The gloves are beautiful. I suppose it depends upon how many you have - if only one or two pairs I would want to keep them just as they are.
In the area where we now lived there used to be a glove making factory and someone at my craft group told me her mum used to make the gloves at home.
The local museum has several lovely examples.

Oh to have my mother's gloves! I was only 13 when she died so I was at school when her things were gone through. I would not cut them , they are so pretty. I remember as a child white gloves were part of out Easter outfit. My mother always wore gloves when she put her nylons/hose on to keep from picking them.
I always loved to wear my mom's and grandma's gloves when we played dress up. Their gloves are long gone now and I wish I had just one pair to keep tucked in a box in my dresser drawer -- just like grandma did.
If you'll never wear them, I think your ideas are a nice way to use them. It, maybe you could make a tiny garland of hearts to hang across the back of a chair, or somewhere. Back the white glove fabric with a pretty, vintage inspired fabric? You could fuse the fabrics together and then cut the shapes with no sewing, except to connect them hearts to the banner string. It might be a sweet, easy way to keep the memory of mom's pretty gloves, in sight. Whew! Didn't mean to get so long winded.

Oh, the gloves are so pretty! I am sure that you will think of something special to do with them.
When I've been sewing a lot my cuticles get dry and sore and sometimes peel. I think it's the dye in the threads. Anyway, at night I slather on lotion and put on cotton gloves to sleep in. It works wonders! blessings, marlene
