Falling in the yard, and simmering on the stove. Monday is Carole's 80th birthday and I'm having her over for stuffed cabbage.
One of her favorites, but her son doesn't like it at all. There's not much that he does like which makes our family dinners monotonous. He'll be out of town so halupki it will be. We'll have her favorite cake at the family celebration next weekend so maybe elderberry pie will be dessert.
Preparing the leaves tonight so I can just fill and roll, bake for hours tomorrow. I turn bowls over and layer the leaves on to hold their shape. This was a very large locally grown head. Our church (which is now closed) made halupki for the picnics and sold them at holidays, their method was to freeze the heads. Freezing made them soft and when thawed, ready to roll, no steaming required. I did try it but was tearing the leaves while removing. Maybe a light steaming in the micro first would have helped. I wanted to try the Instant Pot pressure cooker but couldn't find info about time and result for a solid head. Not a good idea to experiment when company is coming.
I'll need to burn candles in several rooms for days!
Half of October is over. Can you believe it? Christmas shows are starting!! Since I have nowhere to browse in person, and my online browsing time is devoted to finding jeans in long length and big ass, are there any new Santa charts that are small and primitive? Any suggestions?
Since there is a day devoted to almost everything including the inane, I am officially naming October 15 as Halupki day. Have a good one.

Best wishes to Carole for a very Happy 80th Birthday.
I hope this will be a totally great week for you and family.
Maybe Pinterest will have some Santa charts "free" ?

Hi, to get rid of odors in your home, just boil some vinegar and water in a small saucepan for 30 minutes.
Hurray for Halupki day!!! And, Happy Birthday to your sister!
Have a wonderful family day. Happy Birthday Carole!
Marly, Happy Halupki Day! Everything sounds delicious. Enjoy the day! SAH
I've never made these - way too much fiddling around with the peeling and stuffing leaves for me, at this time anyway. Happy birthday to Carole.
I'm in the same boat as you with jeans. Why is it so damned difficult for stores to keep larger sizes in long lengths in something besides "Mom jeans"? My size in boot-cut must be popular - IF I find them, there's only one pair, there's so many pairs of all sorts of styles on the shelf for short women, of all sizes.
I love cabbage rolls, made some the other day. I love to do all the work, it makes me happy to cook and bake. Happy Birthday Carole. Big hugs. I never wear jeans. I have a twist in my spin and never found them comfortable to wear. big hugs
Hello I make stuffed cabbage (golabki) too. A lot of work but worth it when they are done. Happy birthday to Carole.
Wishing a Happy, Happy 80th Birthday to Carole!! Enjoy your mid-October celebration :)
Today is my birthay as well, but being of Polish decent, its Happy Golabki Day for me! I bet yours are wonderful- have a wonderful meal :-)
Happy Birthday to Carole!
Happy, happy birthday to Carole!
I am not a fan of stuffed cabbage, either. My mom tried to convince me it was just like a hamburger, but I wasn't buying it then...or now :)
I love stuffed cabbage but I never could make it good enough!
Happy Halupki Day!!! Yum and a very Happy Birthday to Carole!!
My mother called them 'guwampki'. No idea if it is spelled correctly, but that is how it sounded to me. She made them with a gravy and mashed potatoes. Yuummm. I have never tried to make them but always loved them. Mom would make them periodically and shared some with me. She finally passed at the age 93. They had a German last name and both of my grandparents were from Warsaw and spoke Polish. I never did learn to speak it. It was convenient for mother and her siblings to talk and us kids did not know what in the hay they were talking about. SAD, but true. Enjoy your feast and Happy Birthday to Carole.
A very Happy Milestone Birthday to Carole. I love stuffed cabbage, haven't made it in a few years but now I think I will. Teresa Kogut has some wonderful primitive Santa patterns, both cross stitched and needle punched. Her patterns are sold everywhere and she has an Etsy shop.
Happy 80th to Carole! And... what time is dinner!? LOL!
Happy Birthday to Carole and yum re the Cabbage rolls!
Hi Marly,
I'm late with my Birthday wishes, but figure this just makes the celebration longer!! Happy Birthday to Carole and I'm sure the stuffed cabbage and the cake were wonderful!!!
Since I LOVE cabbage, I don't see why there can't be a special day to celebrate it either!!
Happy Halupki Day!!!
Enjoy your week!
