A man's opinion

After wasting HOURS on the masks, which is a simple project, I watched Missouri Star Quilts video which made it so much easier.  I was pivoting at corners while positioning the elastic and her method is much better. These are for Matt and my brother so I had Mark test fit them.  He thought the cording would hurt the ear, the wider elastic folded the ear, and the bias tape ties .... the winner.  So comfortable and there is no gapping at the sides.   Only had one package of tape so I used shoe laces for another.  We usually keep them from our worn out shoes for tying tomato plants and such, they worked out to be the easiest and quickest of all.  I cut them in half and sewed into the seam, easy to tie and not as bulky as the tape.
Then Martha was kind enough to send me a link to an alternative tie and I love it!  You're no-reply Martha so I am thanking you here.  She cuts strips from a t-shirt and then stretches them, they roll up!  Great comfort and enough stretch to slip on and off.  Here is the link to her video.

It's become the responsibility of schools to feed kids breakfast and lunch, even during summer at which time they can bring two adults for meals.  From the size of some adults and kids, they aren't hurting for food.  My idiotic corrupt school district is using the school bus to deliver the meals daily, other districts have a parent pick up several days of meals at one time.  My neighbor is a teacher that makes over $75000/yr for life, and his wife is the head pharmacist at the hospital.  The live in a massive beautiful home with pool on several acres.  The other neighbor is CEO of a solar company.  And my taxes are paying to feed their kids.  I thought the program helped those that are in need and met financial guidelines.  I guess not.

Have a good day!!

Stay safe.

A real head scratcher to be sure. We just keep needing to "chip in" and keep our mouths shut right? Nothing to see here!

Where/when did it become the government’s responsibility (and my tax dollars) to feed the kids?
I know someone who was a “lunch lady” at the high school. The majority of the food distributed to students was thrown away.
At what point does a person need to take responsibility? I guess in today’s society where one is “entitled” one doesn’t need to.
OK. Off my soapbox.

WHAAAT??! Say it ain't so! I was having issues with the whole school breakfast/lunch thing (not to sound uncaring, but hey...many of these people are being paid to stay home...and they don't have the cost of child care...and time to cook??) And don't get me started on the teacher thing. I taught law at the university level and was paid peanuts (actually, peanuts might have had more value than I was paid)....but if I taught at the elementary school or high school level, I would have had a year-round salary and benefits. Doesn't quite compute for me. Hope I didn't start a riot on your blog LOL....I know there are tuly those in need, but dang...we need a better way of finding out who they are and assisting them....rather than flinging dollars out the door and hoping a dollar or two makes it way to someone who really needs it. ~Robin~

I just want all of this to be over. It's really starting to get to me.
I made masks out of a pair of socks. They seem to work okay.
I haven't been out. My daughter does all of the going. I told her that she's staying in this week.
Was supposed to have the MOHS surgery on my hand on Friday. Am going to reschedule. Not taking any chances and it's supposed to be cold and windy here.
Take care, stay well !

I find it hard to believe that some people are actually profiting over all this. People were in the grocery store bragging about how much extra they received in food stamp money. What about those of us who get no food stamps but have to pay the higher prices the stores are charging? I am still working everyday because my job is a necessity for the same amount of money. I am struggling to pay the higher prices. How nice for the people who continue to stay home and receive help for their groceries!

I wallowed with indecision on mask making - SO much conflicting information on materials and style. I finally made ones on 7 Pine Design blog. 2 each for DH, DS and his GF, DS's friend's GF, and one for myself. That's so far. Now, do I keep making masks, not knowing if they'll be needed? Maybe I'll make a few more, just to have them on hand. It seems like a lot of long neglected sewing machines are seeing the light of day again. I went with ties because of issues with fit & irritation from elastic, not to mention availability and possible issues with latex allergies.

OMG! Don't get me started with the schools and food...I watch my neighbors chain smoking and drinking....then paying a landscaping company to cut their 20 sq ft of grass....and then their kids get free meals at school? Did I mention that every member of that household also has a smart phone?!?!?!? AND they have cable TV?!?!?!? AND new LEASED cars every 3 years?!?!?!? Priorities....no one has them anymore...
When I was a kid my parents "treated" us to a hot cafeteria lunch once a week... and if we were 10 cents short....we did not get a milk with our lunch... the other 4 days we brought our PBJ in a paper sack...
And yes....there ARE families that really need the assistance....but, how do you go about getting it to them without the "lunch shaming" that folks are complaining about here in NJ?
Great going on the face masks! There is another way to do it with a folded bandana and a couple of rubber bands...this is what I do because it is easier to wash and dry each time I get back to the house.
Stay safe and be healthy!

I am masking masks for family members, using Jenny Doan's pattern with ties. I happened to have a jelly roll of 2 1/2" strips in a neutral beige, and they are working quite well.

I suspect that some districts get more than they really need and rather than be creative in helping everyone, they "justify" the allotment by just allocating it where they will and putting those figures in the right columns...for all we know, the really needy don't get the best of the deal or maybe not at all because they are too proud to put their hand out.... Gone are the days of pride and self-sufficiency in some quarters. They'll never REALLY make it. Off the soapbox.....

Thanks for the link, Marly! I made two masks this weekend that turned out well, but I saw another more fitted one on a YouTube Vietnamese girl's channel which I want to give a try. It may be a waste of time as the subtitles are pretty bad and it is in centimeters, but hey--I have the time, right?

Keep in mind that NONE of the masks will prevent the wearer from inhaling virus.

Masks are to prevent YOUR germs from reaching OTHER people.

Very nice tips on the masks. I made two, just with ties -- I don't have any elastic.
