Another bad idea?

I've seen the zippered boxes for hundreds of dollars, the small flat one with removble inserts for almost two hundred, and many other niceities that for me would not be functional.  The Stella in me requires usability along with visuality for purchases that pricey.

Speaking of Stella, this box was one of two from her flatware.  I removed the dividers and holders, thought keeping it open and filled  with a display of needlework smalls and vintage sewing items would be sweet set on a side table.  Adding a sampler displayed on the open lid would be great.  Another option to keep in mind.  Or make note of since my memory fails me often.

The silver plated flatware is unwanted by thrift stores or elsewhere, just like china and crystal.  Not dishwasher safe, too much upkeep from tarnish.  I was told to discard the dinnerware in the trash, the crystal also since it cannot be recycled (crystal items have lead).  I read that the colored Pyrex bowl sets do also, but it's the outside only, no way to ingest, and extremely minimal.  We all grew up with those mixing bowls, used continually.  I still use them and have no concerns at all since I don't nibble the color off.  Pretty much impossible to do.

Nice day today, on my way to the swing for a little warmth from the sun.

Enjoy your day!

I know the zippered cases of which you speak I do believe. Yeah...a bit much. I love, love, love the flatware box ideas you are brewing up. Hadn't thought of it until Lauren (Rugs and Pugs) showed cases she was selling on a photo of one of her vending events. I have my mother's case...and my grandmother's...but cannot, CANNOT, bring myself to deface them (even though they're not in good shape) nor discard the flatware. Sentimental sap or hapless hoarder?? You decide. ~Robin~

Another fun use for an old silverplate box. I must have at least a half dozen of them...but have done nothing with them. Some day...sigh ;-)

I think you’re on to something, Marly. I have my MIL’s silverware in the box, but would never deface mine either. Every once in a while I polish it for our Christmas dinner. I’d call us “sentimental saps”! Have a good weekend. Cherie in WI

I have two silver cases.........one for sterling, one for sliver plate, my mother's. Would never get rid of either.
I do have another smaller box that tea came in. Would be cute with Santa or Americana decor. May try it.
Have a good weekend.......going to be a rainy one here in Va.

I'm drawing a blank on the zippered cases you refer to. Probably a good thing.
Sad about the plated silver, crystal, fancy dishes, etc. All the more reason to not save such things "for good" and use them daily.
Yet...if *we* don't want to deal with the special handling those things might require, why expect others to?

What a wonderful way to repurpose your box, Marly! I really like that idea with leaving it open and adding the stitching to the inside of the lid. Happy Saturday!

Here on the East Coast, Pyrex anything is snatched up at crazy prices. There are some Handwringing Hannahs who wail about lead, but many people don't care, especially if they're only going to use as display.

I find it a hoot that the pattern I got as my everyday-ware back when I got married in '82, is the latest to become highly sought after. Spring Blossom, because it was cheap and plentiful back then. Still using it, but apparently I could get hundreds $$ for the various pieces.
