Every year, this day

If Sjogren's had not stolen my tears, there would be a river.

The sadness in my heart every year on this day cannot be taken away.

That generation has always held my heart.  Mom's neighbor's concentration camp tattoo, my cousin's life altering visit to Auschwitz, the photos of suffering and evil, the brave young men that faced this battle, the mothers saying goodbye, those left in foreign lands.

Forever grateful.

How many will be here to honor next year?

My father was one of the liberators. He lived to see the end of the War, but never talked about it. We found the medals and papers in his military trunk years afterward. I always taught a huge unit on the Holocaust. I took "Never Forget" to heart. Still do.

Just reading your post brings tears to my eyes. My dad landed there on June 7 to unspeakable horrors. He, too, never spoke of it.
May God bless our troops, past and present.
May God bless America.

I feel the same way, Marly. Watching those elderly heroes revisit the battlegrounds in Normandy this week, I just can't help but cry. What brave young men they were as mere teenagers and how different our world would look if they hadn't had the courage to fight back against the evil. My last living uncle died last year--he was one of the few remaining survivors of the Battle of the Bulge. The Greatest Generation for sure...

I cannot watch any of the ceremonies without tears - or chills. A great generation that sadly, I fear, will never be replicated. ~Robin~

We often hear of the 6,000,000 Jews that lost their lives during WWII but because of the Cold War little is said in this country about the losses our Allies endured. The deaths in the Soviet Union were about 27,000,000, both civilian and military. That war would not have been won without their sacrifices.

I appreciate what Nancy did by teaching a unit on the holocaust. I wonder what is taught in most schools today? This is such an important day in our history. We have been watching Band of Brothers, one of the best TV series ever. It makes you realize the horrors the soldiers faced in freeing Europe and what a job they did. We must never forget. It is so easy to take our freedom for granted.

Did watch the ceremony in Normandy with tears thinking of all those people who lost their lives there and in the holocaust in the camps.
Thinking we didn't learn a thing with all the wars in the world today......
Enjoy your day in freedom....
Take care Marly, Truus from Holland

I had never seen this image of the invasion and will carry it with me always.. the immensity
and sacrifice of it all. Only fools contemplate the show of power in aggressive war, that wise men and "boys" have to counter and clean up.. when will we learn? God bless America
for her protection of freedom....
