A new leaf

Carole and I loved sweet potato vines, that beautiful green mixed with bright flowers.  I considered a wet foam block for their stone's saddle filled with these vines, but realized a silk arrangement would be better.  The several cut from my plant and held in water, rooted very quickly.  I guess a pot and dirt are in order now, we'll see how long it lives indoors.

Their stone is last row down a slope, impossible to see behind larger stones from the cemetery drive.  After finding a company (american molded plastic in ohio) that makes a headstone saddle held with wing nuts, wind is no longer an issue, nor is visibility. Foam blocks with different arrangements can be wired and removed as needed.  Sellers on amazon and etsy are double in price, I purchased directly from them which included shipping.

Chris came home last night, surgery went well, doctor is confident the biopsy will be negative.  Four weeks off work when he needs to stay busy, will make it harder to deal with her not being there.

Stitching on Anne is becoming a chore.  That door was so distracting and I could not envision this finished, doubt if that would be any different when the entire house is stitched.  So it will be changed.

First, I'll test the color from 370 to 642, adding a window, or as drastic as narrowing it and extending the bricks.  Too much to think about.  Too much to change.

But it may keep me interested.

Next post will show how I screwed up the PS ornaments while stitching in the dark hospital room.

Thanks for sticking with me and your kind words.

Be well.

Good to know Chris came through his surgery and the doctor is confident of good results, Marly. I wish him well. I had no idea was a headstone saddle was so had to google it. Yes, the colors in the door would be too much for me, too. I know you'll find a good solution and I hope that any stitching that's being done is providing at least a bit of comfort. Take care now ♥

I love sweet potato vines too...bright green, deep purple and everything in between. It's unfortunate they are always the first to freeze. Good luck with the rootings. My cats would eat them. You will have to share photos of the gravestone and saddle when you have them all in place...and I might bug you to share the info on the saddle. I had a hugely difficult time choosing a stone for Mark's grave. I love the huge, old, stones and the places I went to looked at me like I was nuts. And the prices they gave me for some I did find acceptable were nuts. I finally chose one (I think I was still in a daze...oh, wait, I still am in a daze...) and that was months and months ago. I should call and see if they expect it before the snow falls here. Ummm, yeah...that door is...weird?? I'm sure you'll come up with perfect fixes. ~Robin~

How fortunate you live in a place where grave offerings aren't stolen. Here they are stripped as soon as they are installed, to be resold at flea markets and pop up parking lot bodegas. A cascading vine will be beautiful.

Happy to hear the good news of Chris’ surgery and he certainly will need a distraction during his recovery. Maybe he can get the kittens/cats fixed and adopted out to new homes. That will give him a purpose but you dear friend, need to take care and allow yourself to grieve in your own timeline.

I agree that door doesn’t belong on the house. It took me years to make changes on my stitching
but you have shown me that following my own vision creates something I love.

Hi Marly: I love sweet potato plants I used them this year in many pots, so happy about Chris coming home.
I would love to see the Saddle headstone.
I too would change the door color.

Hugs
Catherine

Hi Marly, so nice to hear you are doing better, and it's nice to hear that treasures left at gravesites are not stolen where you are but the ability to secure something to the headstone is a wonderful idea. If I am not certain of a colour, I put it aside and work other areas, then audition the questionable colour next to the rest of the work, if I still don't like it, I change it. (((hugs))) Marian

Good to hear Chris had the surgery done and is at home. Hope hè can do now something at the mess they made and clean up their stuff.
Never heard of a sweet potato plant, but I know sweet potato's you can eat....
Hope it will be as you had in your mind with the headstone.
Your stitching will be as good as it can be in the end...I don't like the door as it is-- too big for the house.
Take care and a big hug to you, Truus from Holland

Such good news about Chris. Now for a good way to keep his mind busy. Glad to say that we've been friends for a long time. Won't leave you now.
Love the sweet potato vine. Don't see why it wouldn't live inside after rooted.
There is just a flat headstone, grave marking where my husband and Mom are buried. Was told not to leave candles and holders out without being watched. Had a nice bow stolen off of an arrangement years ago.
Am having neuropathy in my hands. Hurts to hold the needle. Makes me sad as I enjoy stitching, keeps my mind busy and enjoy the finished piece.
Take care of yourself.

Good to know Chris came through the surgery ok and the doctor is confident that all will be ok. I had never heard of a headstone saddle either, so googled. A sweet potato vine will be lovely (Fletch puts one or two in our kitchen window box every Spring). Sending hugs your way Marly - take care.

Will continue to pray for Chris. I did not like this pattern because of that door. I like your change. Janice

There is not green like the sweet potato vine, is there? In any arrangement or outdoor planting it is like a punctuation mark. So glad Chris did well with his surgery and once the final report is given, he will be able to take a deep breath. We never know our strength until it is tested. Stay well, best wishes.

Looking at photos of the complete sampler on the pattern, the door doesn't seem that bright once the house is done??? Who knows how accurate that is by the time it gets to my eyes though. There's too many chances for photo color to change between the original & my computer.
I'm glad Chris came through surgery OK, and hope his doctor is right about the biopsy. Bad timing to be home recovering from surgery for 4 weeks right after Carole passed away - too much thinking time. Maybe give him a cross stitch kit?? He may decide to pick it up to keep his mind occupied with something besides TV or thinking about Carole. Though if he's anything like I was when I had surgery, sleep will occupy quite a bit of time for a couple of weeks.
